Mac osX 10.4.9 p2 usb fix

backup your system before you update - i went through hell last night trying to recover the botched update - use the combo package from apple not the software update

WAAAAAAAAHHHHOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!

I ran the update today (through Software Update) and tested some transfers with my P2Store and my MacBook Pro. It runs just as fast, if not faster than, the USB transfer on a Wintel computer now.

This is great...I was really unhappy that everytime I wanted to dump my P2Store I'd have to boot my MacBook Pro into XP and do the transfer to a FAT32 formatted drive. With this fix, I can stay totally OSX native through my whole workflow and not sacrifice transfer speed.

Oh happy day!

I used the Software Update on my Quad Core G5, no problems. Always run Disk Utiltity on your System drive to repair permissions before running any update. And run it again afterwards.

Cynic ther were some who had problems with the speed of the download and some with problems with not all "no names" showing up in finder.

TimR21. Since you are getting fast transfer times I am curious how you transfer off the P2 store. Do you drag all the folders contents at once or are you transfering lastclip.txt. first then contents folder.

oh ya, repairing is usually a good tip though just to solve some very minor hiccups you might not run into yet, or may never run into but fix em anyways

Mico

I tested it dragging both the Contents folder and the LASTCLIP file over at the same time. In the past I would have to do them individually if I wanted the faster speed....now I don't have to.

I'm new to Mac. What does repair permissions do?

It was probably the amount of people trying to download it at the same time that made it give you a bad download. It can happen, but I haven't seen it happen with a software update before.

Repair Permissions is just the file system check utility that is built into all UNIX systems. UNIX is based on a security permissions concept, that came from the military using it so much in the first days of computers. It's similar to the old ScanDisk in Windows, but not litterally the same things. But figuratively, you could think of them as similar.

There are also tasks a UNIX system does daily, weekly, and monthly to keep itself clean and working properly. If you turn your Mac off at night, or if it goes to sleep mode at night, you need to download the freeware app Mac Janior and run it once a week. Just run everything it does once a week. Mac Janitor allows you to trigger those functions manually. UNIX systems run them automatically anywhere from midnight to 3am, depending on who's flavor of UNIX you run.

Good OS X maintenacne is to run Mac Janior once a week, first. Then, at the same sitting, run Disk Utility and Repair Permissions on your System drive, and Repair Disk on all your other hard drives at that time, also. Then once a month run Disk Warrior on all your drives. You should be fine.

As for bad updates, it happens. I've seen it happen with Software Update, I've seen it happen with the downloaded stand-alone updaters. It happens, not everyday, but, on occation.

Onyx and Yasu, along with MacJanitor, are some of the best system maintenance utilities out there.

They are either free or very inexpensive, and any of them will also repair permissions.

I do it regularly, and also always before and after a system upgrade or application install.
