Searched and searched, but couldn't find a definitive answer...

Sooo- does the OS bug affect the Firestore FS100 the same way it affects P2 cards?

i'm trying to decide on my laptop situation. i'd like to get a 15" Ti PB, but if there's gonna be problems... well, I'll have to look at some cheap PCs.

Thanks guys

Depends on what OS bug you're referring to. Apparently, and I'm asking for users to confirm this, but "the glitch" that corrupts P2 card footage appears to be related to putting cards into a Mac without using the write-protect switch. I've heard reports that the glitch goes away if you just make sure you always, always write-protect the card before putting it in the Mac. OSX writes some files on any unprotected volume it mounts, and it appears that that action may be behind what's causing the glitched files (even though I can't fathom why that would affect anything; still there's some bit of evidence to suggest it is in fact related).

So if that's the case, perhaps the FS-100 would be equally affected, perhaps not. You can't write-protect an FS-100! But I don't know if we've heard reports of FS-100 users complaining about glitched footage recently. There were comparable glitches with the FS-100 early, early on, but the first and second firmware revisions seem to have taken care of that.

As to other mac issues (like FCP reporting that a file is corrupt when it really isn't), presumably that would affect the FS-100 equally as well as the P2 cards, but again, we'd need more feedback from FS-100 owners to know for sure.

thanks Barry! btw- i bought the HVX bootcamp DVD, and it's amazing. And I just got my 8gig P2 card/your book in the mail last week... Great job on the book too!!!

back to topic, if anyone has some more 411 :)

Barry, as you pointed out, the glitch can effect FS-100's, too. I'm not aware of a problem exclusive to P2 cards. Since 5.1.4, though, 99% of the folks I've been in touch with that had the "glitch" have reported it's fixed. There's still 1 or 2 out there struggling. I did get word directly from the FCP product manger at Apple they are aware of it, are working on it, and P2 will become more and more seamless over time.

To speculate, reading between the lines, and this is just my own guess, nothing official, but I bet FCP has native MXF support in 6.0, and a much more advanced P2 Import window (as nice as the current one is), and that P2 Import window will be optional. But that's only my personal voodoo look into the future in my magic crystal ball. Oh, wait, this isnt a crystal ball, it's a blown headlight from my old tractor. Never mind...

thanks for chiming in Ben! i was hoping you'd chime in on this. I almost sent you a pm about it.... anyway, i think that about covers it. when you and Barry contribute to a thread, i think it can be locked away and archived ;)

thanks guys!

I'm running the FS-100 3.0 and FCP 5.1.4 and having no problems at all. Aside from sometimes when connecting the HVX itself and mounting the P2 cards, sometimes the second card shows up like a folder icon, rather than a disk image drive icon. But it works just fine, no problems. Mounts, ingests, un-mounts. And sometimes the second P2 card just doesn't mount, and I have to yell the HVX make it re-mount. Geez, I'm starting to sound like I'm doing porn scripts...

But between the FS-100 and FCP, I'm having no problems.

I am crossing my fingers for only one more specific feature to be added to the FS-100 one day, and it'll be perfect. If it could do QuickTime PN clip spanning, internally, that would just blow me the friggin' ef away!

thanks again Ben... I absolutely agree. The non-spanning is what screwed my test up with the Firestore... I got a few glitches (mostly audio) when i laid the clips out on the timeline. although, I am still running FCP 5.0.4 on a mac mini, so.....

For the record, with the versions I'm using, I have no glitches, all clips fit together seemlessly.

good to hear... can't wait to get that MBP!!! especially now that the duel system adapter is coming shortly (for real this time?)

okay... so i got the MBP. And I'm still having issues with importing firestore footage...

problem one is that some of the clips won't even open...

problem 2 is this:

Picture2-1.jpg

Picture1-1.jpg

these are the sort of glitches that come up every hour or so in the footage for 1-4 frames each occurance...

it's a timelapse set at 720/30p.... it plays back fine through the camera...
the screen grabs are off it playing in quicktime.... so it's not a fcp problem...

version 3.0 on the fs100

any help?
