Mac computer and HVX

Im a PC guy, but Im thinking about buying one of the new macs with FCP to edit my HVX footage.

I heard that the memory from Crucial is really cheap -- much, much cheaper than buying the memory upgrades through apple

My question is this: what's the tradeoff? Why is it so cheap? Does Crucial memory suck? Or is it pretty good? I'm all for saving money, but not at the sacrifice of performance.

Would most of you say crucial memory is good?

Crucial memory is pretty good.. But when I was at Macworld last year, I found this company that is Apple Developer Certified that actually manufactures most of their own chips... The company is www.nuimpact.com... They are based in Canada and make GREAT RAM!!! Lifetime guarantee on their ram, and are super great on the phone.. Everyone knows Apple charges exceptionally high prices for their ram.. Stop the madness!!

I just speced out a new Macbook Pro and to bump from 1-1gig stick to 2-1 gig sticks was an extra $158 as an educator. A 1 gig stick from Crucial was 175. I went with Apple on that one!!

how important is the video card with HD footage. Should you upgrade your ram first or the video card on a G5 Mac?

Video card is becoming more critical as Apple moves to Fx plug in FCP. It is already critical in Motion. We will see more and more activity off-loaded to GPU, so I do think the video card is critical. I have a Radeon x800 in my G5. I do not yet have a Mac Pro or Macbook Pro owing to the company's business manager's pragmatic approach to finances (read "wife is CFO and she always applies her MBA approach to things, taking away all the fun of going into the toy store'). Seriously, though, you need both RAM and graphics card for most effective use of FC Studio.

I think the new MBp core2duo 's have the X1600 with max 3 G of RAM. Is that enough to run FCS with multiple timlines (how many will run at the same time without having to wait all the time) ?

yeah if you guys know where to get less expensive ddr2 ram let me know cause I just got the Mac pro for my hvx; awsome computer by the way, I'll be able to work with HD 1080p at full rez nine ways to sunday but the ram cost about $220 per gig stick. the Mac can hold up to 16 gigs! I just crossed over to Mac after owning about 7 pcs. it was time. too bad I still gotta wait until the end of the month for the intel version of avid for the mac.
