Mac Clones

so if I take software I can buy in the store and put it on a computer that I bought online, all of which was done legally, I become a criminal? Eula whatever, that is insane. Are windows people freaking out about people running windows on a mac? No, they arn't. Why is apple so freaking monopolous. I understand they design hardware and software to work seamlessly together, but really.... making it criminal for someone to install an operating system they purchased on a computer they have at home is insane.

I know high performance things such as super cars, usually have a clause in the warranty about any modifying of the car, or using non performance gas etc voids the warranty, but it's not criminal.

Apple makes friggen computers.

If you don't agree with the license then don't buy it.

I passed up a great house because the covenant stated that the garage door could only be open when pulling into the garage or pulling out of the garage. All all other times, it must remain closed.
If I had bought it, I would have painted the garage door to look like the inside of my garage. :)

Apple uses OSX to sell computers. If it's running on non-Apple hardware, then they don't like that.

Microsoft doesn't make computers. They license the software to anyone that wants to buy it.

Apple wants you to buy their computers which is why they want you to only run OS X on Apple machines.

I don't think it's fair that Ferrari charges so much for their cars either. I mean after all they just go from point A to point B like my Nissan pickup so why should they cost so much more?

I hope Apple's lawyers run Pystar into the ground.

"hey I've got a business plan.. lets undermine all those years of R&D that apple put into it's own products.. and try and make a quick buck off there product.."

This is not a mac clone.. this is blatant theft. If Apple license the OS to other companies those would be real clones..

Apple is freaking out.. because you are stealing their products. You don't want a Mac.. what you want is a PC that will run mac software.

I am not sure why it is such a foreign concept to think of apple as a separate product in an industry dominated by windows. They are not cheap for a reason. The price of Apple's hardware is a big subsidy to their R&D, a budget MSFT has from licensing their OS.

If apple allowed you to run their OS on generic PC hardware, their business would go under very quickly.

...own a bit of Apple stock do ya'? Welcome to America! I guess we won't talk about the years of R&D Xerox put into the GUI before Apple stole the idea?

Competition makes for better product & pricing for all users.

Well that would be simplistic view point of that senario now wouldn't it.

Perhaps we should research Xerox's plan on the technology.. or where all the employee's working in that R&D section went to work when Xerox gave it the axe.

I don't own apple stock. Though at this point, I am wishing i had bought some in the dark years in the mid 90's.

I am canadian... just clarifying.

Not sure how the idea got started that installing an OS (non-pirated, of course) against its EULA is "criminal." You may be in breach of contract, but that's almost never a criminal matter.

Sometimes it is simple. I ‘simply’ don’t agree with your point. Competition makes us all better. It pushes us to develop new solutions that help to advance technology, drop costs and get that technology into more people’s hands. Hat’s off to PsyStar for trying to make it easier for the general public to use Apple software… in the long run, this will only benefit Apple.

As you know Apple changed their name from Apple Computers to Apple. It is widely believed this is to position them as more of an entertainment company. With the tweak & re-release of Apple TV, they want to completely crush the video/DVD rental business…the same way they dominate the music download world with iTunes. In keeping with your train of thought, shouldn’t iTunes only be available for Mac computers?

I’m just saying…all’s fair in love & business.

…and congrats on being Canadian (I wish I were, if only for the healthcare!), But I was referring to the companies in question, both are based in the USA:

PsyStar Corporation
10475 NW 28th St
Doral, FL 33172

Apple
1 Infinite Loop
Cupertino, CA 95014

Microsoft seems to be doing OK... :Drogar-Evil(DBG):
Revenue ▲ US$ 60.420 Billion (2008)
Employees 89,809 in 105 countries (2008)[7]

Psystar Purchased OSX Licenses directly from apple, I wouldn't exactly call it theft.

Hat’s off to PsyStar for trying to make it easier for the general public to use Apple software… in the long run, this will only benefit Apple.

It's not up to PsyStar to determine the most beneficial distribution of OS X. :)

It's Apple's property -- they determine how it's packaged, how it's sold, and what hardware it's allowed to run on. 100% their own prerogative. They don't owe the consumer any options at all - the only option the consumer is guaranteed is: buy or don't buy.

This is ridiclulous! No one is stealing ****! What is the big deal when Apple is getting PAID for their product? There is none. All of that R&D is making them money in this situation because it's being used. This is not theft in the least.

Competition for competitions sakes doesn't make us better. Competition is great and all but what is it you want more competition in here?

Competition is great if it is actual competition. Pystar is just stealing, (outright) and re-packaging it and selling. If you think the PARC system is the same as the Mac OS, ie: a carbon copy, you need a stronger prescription set of glasses.

I am not sure how a music library app like iTunes compares to a Operating System, but I digress. When one requires the other to run in the first place.

Your argument is like saying "Hey the Playstation 3 OS is pretty cool.. but I can't afford the hardware... so there should be more competition so they open up their OS to install onto cheaper hardware"

Clearly that statement is ridiculous. But how is it different from this situation? Sony doesn't license there OS out to other console makers.. it is a closed hardware / software environment. They do allow you to install a different OS on their system though.. surprisingly similar to what apple allows.

Yet nobody cries foul about this? Why?

You are not talking about competition here... if that were true.. this conversation would be about a new Operating system that does things way better than Mac OSX. (Some might argu Xp - Vista here..)

Funny you mention the Apple TV.. Apple is *competing here with a crowed field already. But... I want to use my TIVO UI on my Apple TV? or vice versa.. Its a dumb argument that nobody would make.

Pystar takes someone elses product. Plain n Simple.. this is not competition. I'd be calling bullshit on Pystar even if they bought hamburgers from McDonalds and simply re-sold them.

Please do explain how Pystar is benefitting the industry with this? I would love to hear that. As if any of the Shitty PC clone makers out there benefit the IT world at all. It's all about a quick buck.

But my ears are open if you want to try.

Realistically fair competition makes us all better. If company X reverse engineered the PS3 and sold a knock-off version for $100 how does that make Sony better and push them to develop new solutions? And the last time Apple allowed clones it nearly killed the company.

In keeping with your train of thought, shouldn’t iTunes only be available for Mac computers?
Inaccurate example. OS X is to Mac computers what iTunes is to iPods. Seen any Zunes connected to the iTMS lately? iTunes is cross platform because Apple will sell more iPods that way. OS X going cross platform will not sell more Macs.

I’m just saying…all’s fair in love & business.
So, for example, working 12 year olds 16hrs a day in dangerous conditions for $0.25/hr is okay because it's business?

You say that, because a) it is not your product so why should you care and b) it is in breach of EULA.

If you spent 10 years developing something only for someone to circumvent your work and make it available on products you don't sell.. you'd want to have a little chat them.

(I realize I am coming off as the apple zealot... but damnit... Standing for stupidity and theft isn't what I do.)

So assumig another company pops up that sells a computer that CAN natively run osx. They dont sell anything affiliated to apple, I go out by this computer and a copy of osx, your going to call me a thief?

I understand what your saying, but I don't agree. Are you going to call it theft if I put a chevy crate engine in my Ford? No because that would make you sound like an idiot.

And if you want to talk about theft, are you going to sit here and tell me you have never downloaded a piece of music online for free? Never watched a tv show on youtube or some other video hosting site? I highly doubt that is the case. So why now the big fuss about PAYING for an operating system and putting it on a computer you bought?

OS X is intended for Macs only. Every instance where it's running on a PC means money not received by Apple for sale of Apple hardware.

You could also argue that Apple is concerned with the perceived dilution of the "Mac experience" what with widespread hacked copies of the software running on all kinds of machines of varying quality and stability. The "Mac experience" and one of the things they've always marketed is that the hardware and software work together so well because they're both designed by the same company.

Just speculation. Regardless, it's their product. You don't like the way the terms of the contract, use Windows.

And chevy engines are meant for chevy trucks, and every time someone buys a crate engine to put in something that isn't a chevy, they are only getting a portion of the money they could get. THATS BUSINESS.

At least somebody gets it!:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

If you want to build/buy a hackintosh, do it. More power to you. :)

Just don't come here asking about it and not expect to hear from people who disagree that it's an ok thing to do.
