mac book pro DVRack workflow

I was wondering if you guys had any input on the portable usb powered HD's? I couldn't find one that was a 7200rpm drive only 5400, which I understand is the minimum for DV rack. Here's my chain

HVX200 to macbook pro/dvrack via firewire, streaming to the usb 5400 drive.

I have one other question...I tried installing dvrack on my macbook pro and for some reason it won't install. I get as far as the activation screen then a error pops up stating that there is a problem installing and to try again later??? Has anyone had this problem? If so how do I resolve it?

I have DVRack Pro running fine on a MacBook Pro under BootCamp. It will not run under Parallels. SeriousMagic chose to use a copy protection scheme from SoftWrap and it can sometimes create havoc trying to install the app. I needed several phone calls to them to straighten it out. Look on the SeriousMagic site for the toll free number to Softwrap and they will help you with the activation.

Meanwhile, I would advise a SATA drive for the MB Pro. I am running a Wiebetech Express34 SATA adaptor to a Wiebetech drive which has USB/FW/SATA and I don't drop a frame. USB2 is fine on the PC side but it will not keep up with editing on the Mac side in FCP.

Since you have DVRack PRo and I presume, then, the DVCPRO HD Decoder software that comes bundled with the HD version, this is actually a great workflow to avoid the OS X bug with P2. Use the DVCPRo HD decoder to transcode the MXF's on your P2 card to QT, save on your media drive, and then boot back into Mac OS to edit in FCP.
