M42 Lenses

I've read that people use lenses with M42 type connections with the DSLRs, using a a suitable adaptor. I do a similar thing connecting my old AI and AIS Nikon lenses to my Canon T2i. However, the old Nikon lenses have the benefit of having manual aperture. Forgive my ignorance but how is the aperture controlled on these M42 connected lenses. I assume its manually or does it depend on the make and model.

I use the T2i with Autochinon lenses (M42). I set the aperture manually by turning the aperture ring on the lens. The camera is in video mode, manually. This allows to choose iso and shutterspeed. When shooting wide open with a fast prime in sunlight, I use a FaderND filter to block the excess light, in order to keep the background blurred.

FYI, I am able to control my aperture manually with my Pentax M42 lens. There is a switch on the side that you can either set to auto or manual. Auto just leaves the iris wide open while manual allows you to manipulate it in either direction.

I have 3 m42 lenses:
a 50mm ricoh rikenon 1:1.4 a 135mm 1:3.5 from an unknow russian manifacturer and a 28mm 1:2.8, they work pretty well on my 7d, ad they allow me to focus to infinity. The adapter was cheap, under 10$...
I have this problem here ( http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=206116 ) and I don't know if this could be caused by a lens wobble or something like that
