Lytro camera - forget about focus

This concept is so innovative that I'm not sure when we'll understand its implications. If the tech is understood/ripped off/marketed by one of the "big boys" I think it may get VERY interesting. I'm sure many here have already seen this tech, but thanks for starting a thread so we can all chat about it....

One more thing....I just want to say that I think that it is GUTSY and COURAGEOUS of this company to launch an innovative and creative design with this new way of capturing images...(via the light field).

I must also admit that it makes me want to PUKE, but they've got guts....and even though I don't like the design on any level, I admire their courage.

(I'm referring to the camera design...or the box with the glass on both ends as it were, lol)

I guess it'd be simple math? I mean it holds 350 photos per 8GBs. Does anyone know the type of compression they're using? If they don't say, then maybe it isn't a simple calculation. I got the email, so I'm considering its purchase - we'll see.

It's cool idea, but trust me the quality of the photographs isn't on par with any pro camera today, although it's not bad... and it's really a novelty idea at this stage. Go to the site and play with their sample photo's. You'll see it's not going to revolutionize photography overnight. Who knows what the future holds, but this camera isn't at the level it needs to be to make this idea a reality among professionals. It's just a fun and unique camera to play with and the future holds much more possibilities.

They should not be releasing this right now, it is so far away from being a legitimate product.

Check back when you've quintipled the final image size, guys. Then maybe you can have ~$150.

Definitely seems like a fun thing to play around with. I know plenty of people that will be using it exactly like the promo video.

Yep. No question. Not good enough. It reminds me of the crappy digital camera (HP, lol) that my friend showed me appx 12 years ago. NOT that this will ever evolve to that degree, but, ....the fact that they have a product AT ALL that can do this is pretty impressive. I saw the article on this "approach" about a year ago. I remember thinking, "Uh....nice theory, but we'll see if they can even turn this into a product..." ...and here they are. NOT good enough for me to buy and/or plan on using at any time, BUT...I give MAD RESPECT that they have done anything AT ALL with an idea so revolutionary.

I can only imagine the possibilities of this tech on an iphone or android... the apps would be amazing... think further forward to a video version, that would be something very special

neat gimmick. however, i'd compare this to a laser guided spoon that prevents you from missing your mouth and pouring soup down your cheek. cool i guess, but necessary? last time i checked, autofocus was doing a pretty good job on most cameras. having to choose a focus point in post sounds like a pain when i can just make that decision while shooting. what's next? paint that can change color after you finish your painting? too many options, not enough art.

I definitely think this the future. A camera that would be able to push more decisions to post, saving production time.

Not only that but, with the 3D depth information, will be a new era for colorists: virtual relighting, object removals, texture adjustments and lot more to come!
Even common tasks like tracking, extractions, stabilization, sharpening, denoising will be improved with the additional 3D data.

Can't wait to know more about this at NAB!

Excellent! lets give more options to the unqualified producer/clients to **** up the footage in post yay!

The last two posts seem to have shades of Luddite thinking attached to them. Don't know where this going, but it seems as if the traditional working models might change using these tools, to provide a greater creative freedom after image capture. I'm sure Tarantino won't go for it, but for others it may spur growth in areas we haven't imagined yet.

Of course, it could all be a passing fad.

These are the initial building blocks for a camera for the next generation or two.

In the future, people will think one was crazy for actually focusing a lens. (What a waste of time...)
