Lunar Eclipse Grab

Lucky Duck
I filmed the entire thing tonight but was trying multiple different settings in the process, exposing for the bright part and then for the dark part. So I didn't get a good consistent timelapse but got some nice individual footage.

This shot is when the moon was completely in the earth's shadow:

I used a 2x telconverter with a 58mm-72mm step-up ring and then added the 1.6x teleconverter (All Century lenses), giving me an effective focal length of 144mm.

Iris was wide open with 1/4th shutter speed and white balance to tungsten (the default one).

Re: Lunar Eclipse Grab

Lovely! The picture I took with my camera phone isn't nearly as impressive. :P

Re: Lunar Eclipse Grab

I just knew you would be the first to post a grab :)

Looks great.

One qustion though, where are the geese? :D

Re: Lunar Eclipse Grab

Looks great. I shot it with onboard lense and got no where near that detail Was that 30i

Re: Lunar Eclipse Grab

So if I were on the moon, I would have seen a solar eclipse... right?

Re: Lunar Eclipse Grab

Right. Earth would move across the Sun's disk. However, it would be very different than a solar eclipse you'd see here on Earth. Moon just about covers Sun when viewing from here, so you get the corona and stuff. Earth appears much larger from Moon (I think about three times the angular diameter) then vice versa, so the lunar solar eclipse (HA! A new term!) would block the Sun completely. And because there is no atmosphere on the Moon (at least that's what they told me at school, never been there myself), you wouldn't have the blue sky around - all you would see is total darkness.

Disjecta, that's a great shot. I took some pictures of a lunar eclipse years ago, but they were with regular 35mm photographic camera, and I made the mistake of using a slide film - too contrasty for this sort of thing.

Re: Lunar Eclipse Grab

I tped mine using a time lapse but the moon kept moving so fast it looks wierd. Did I do this right? At first I centered the moon on the squares on the display and within 15 minutes if was almost out of range. anyways, when i plyed it back it looks jumpie. Is this because the moon was not a fixed object? when doing a time lapse are you supposed to speed up the film or leave as is (beggining timelapse user)?

Good Grab by the way! Oh! yeah were are the geese?

Re: Lunar Eclipse Grab

here's my grab, unfortunately I dont have any fancy lenses, so this is as far as it would zoom. my timelapse is also screwed since the moon got so bright then so dark.

Re: Lunar Eclipse Grab

how do you set the white balance to "tungsten" ? I'm not sure what this setting is, but I was in this music studio and they asked me to put my camera at that setting and I was confused.

Re: Lunar Eclipse Grab

It's the one of the default switches on your camera. I think it's marked as 3200k

Dude, is that a UFO?! :o ;D

Re: Lunar Eclipse Grab

Why tungsten? Why not 5600K? The light source is the SUNS reflection is it not?

Just asking.

Re: Lunar Eclipse Grab

Interesting question, I'm not sure but when I switch to 5600k and shoot the moon, it has an unnatural and intense orange tinge to it. (I'm talking about non-eclipse shooting).

I think it has to do with the Earth's atmosphere. I mean, in the morning, when the sun is rising and very intense, it's not close to 5600k and ditto for the evening time....

Re: Lunar Eclipse Grab

Its a plane that flew by while I was recording. its blurred cuz the slow shutter
