Luma clipping with AE / Shake solutions

Without being too verbose, I've been trying to figure out how to get footage brought in from the HVX into AE without clipping the above 100 IRE values. Does anyone have a solution that doesn't involve reducing a clip's levels and re-exporting the clip? There's a problem with bringing raw footage into AE (or Shake for that matter), that clips the superwhites and I have yet to see a solution. Help?

PS
1. I realize I can reduce levels in each clip in a YUV-based editor, which seems like another form of hell, as each clip would need a unique setting. And then exported. Seems clumsy.
2. I'm trying to maximize available information as part of a YUV - RGB grading system, so I'm not so interested in perfect lighting on capture at this point ;).
3. Auto Duck is a great idea (using original clips, not exported ones from a timeline), but doesn't solve the clipping issue (not their fault).
4. Did a Media Manage recompress from FCP (my best-hope at this point -- easy to keep editing with, makes changing CODECs a snap, etc.), using Sheer's various incarnations. I hoped that it would convert the YUV info into RGB without costing me the above. It doesn't seem to work, though. I'm still losing highlights that are available in FCP but remain unavailable in AE or Shake. And, yes, I used the options to experiment with SuperWhite mappings in FCP as well as Sheer's mappings to RGB.

Any ideas or reports of success with this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Hi,

Here is my experience...

YUV max level is 255, when it is converted to RGB any level above 235 is clipped.
I use Fusion, when I import a video file I set the color depth to FLOAT16 (not integer 16) so it can keep the dynamic range with the "extra" low black and high white levels.
When saving the compositing I don't use a standard RGB format (like TGA, BMP, etc), I use a video format that can keep the levels, or YUV, or OpenEXR (from ILM)
I don't use AE, but check the color depth if you have option for Float16 or Half Float or even Float32.
Also, Float helps the color corrections, since more dynamic range is available.
