low light test?

Everyone has good, clutch advice but I think the only real way to find out what camera I should use is by testing the ex1 and the 500. If this post is still around after I get some conclusions, I will post the results.

I am going to guess the 500 is going to be better. any takeers

Well personally I think the EX is great image wise, easily the best out there in its class(which is a diff market to the HPX). Side by side a HPX and EX and you will see the differences. Easiest way to decide whats going to work for you. Not sure what the EX does but anything blown out seems not so bad, the camera rolls it off pretty well. HPX with its big chips has many other advantages.

Audio IMO is not so great, and some of the audio controls just leave me thinking why? Audio to audio the HPX delivers great quality on 4 independent channels and that matters to me. Everyone else is talking image - so I wanted to look at some other factors for you.

Thats a good point. There is a audio guy on the project that has a digital mixer and hard-drive. I am not so big on stuff like that but it would seem the audio would be fantastic w/ the 500.

Dosn't the HPX have a roll off setting like the HVX? Such as B-press has low, medium, high and auto. I figured it would be better than a ex1

OK there.... so i shot yesterday with my HPX with candles only... scene for a movie...

here is the video: http://www.digitalvideo.lt/candlelight.mov
(please use save file as..., ~80 mb, 720p)

Camera does have a lot noise, but it's possible to clean it up. Furthermore, i guess you just
can't do such things with any HDV camera :D also, my lens is only f/2.0...

Yes of course it does. I was talking in terms of a lower budget camera.

Have to be careful as the EX is not HDV, and there are many misconceptions born from early HDV iterations that dont apply to latter iterations, such as Canon A1/XLH1.

And certainly I dont think the image you showed from the HPX is too noisy by any means.

i played with the camera even more yesterday, those shots were made with cinelike d gamma, cineline v would have give way less noise in darkest areas...

Tomas Tomas Tomas....
I downloaded your video. Looks great and looks great. Dude, seriously, if you ever need another shooter for those types of shots, let me know. I've been shooting the wrong things this whole time......

Bpress is a bit too much....

Kit, i'm in Lithuania, central europe, if you're willing to come, let me know :)

Fantastic shoot!

But really, there is not as much noise as I thought there would be. Thanks for uploading that too. It helps alot with predicting what the Image is going to look like.

Do you have the stock lens that came with the HPX. Because that is what I have to shoot with. Budget is tight.

man that noise reduction software you have is the jam. i just played your clip thru my monitor with the blue only turned on. it starts off quite noisy but when the clip switches to the noise reduction section it all just goes away. i still saw the blocks from the h.264 but very minimal noise if any.
nice...

Hi Tomas,

That noise reduction cleans up the shadows quite a bit. What software did you use?
