Low Light Streaks - Is my camera faulty?

lol ben..for real, i thought about doing that just for the heck of it just to see what they will come up with, i mean all the gh1's has that but i thought i give it a try...maybe not...you guys are still shooting with -2 noise reduction and -2 in sharppness correct? any other setting that may reduce this other than try not to underexspose?

I am not shooting -2 sharpness I usually shoot 0 or +1 because the in theory it applies the sharpening filter off the sensor before the codec ****s everything up which means that it can, again in theory, improve image quality in some situations because the codec is able to detect changes that it otherwise would have trouble noticing (in high detail areas) and thus record them, and avoid muddling things...at least this is Barry and other's theory.

I am shooting NR -2 and more importantly contrast -2.

got it..i will try to up my sharpness to +1, thanks for that... and your shooting smooth mode i take it correct?

Till now I've only tried the vibrant mode with custom settings and I like it. But in next shoot I'm going to try the smooth and see how it comes out...

I actually sent my GH1 back a week ago for repairs on a separate issue, my kit lens malfunctioned on me, and I did emphatically mention the streaking problem I was having. So I'll let you guys know if it changes anything.

Im hoping to get it back on the 15th.

Did you already get the camera? Does it still has streaks?

Do you guys think Panasonic will ever release a firmware to fix this issue?

ive got the camera, and there aren't any streaks. also, i properly expose my camera whens shooting and i'm also shooting with a 50mm 1.4

I just bought this camera Monday. I bought it for the video. I can get a 600 dollar DSLR and get the pictures I want. So to find these vertical lines/discoloration running on the image the entire time for a 1499 USD camera is VERY troubling. In areas of properly exposed flesh tones, I see green and yellow lines. I've put a CS ticket in with panasonic and planned to send in the camera. I may stop by my local shop and see if I can just do a return and cut my losses. I loved my DVX100A and was hoping this would be a great move into HD. So far its just been frustration.
:violent5:

Sorry guys, still waiting on Panasonic to send it back.
I've called every other day for progress, but I can never really get a good beat on when to expect it back. They've been "waiting on a part" for over a week and a half now!

Has anyone else had the same issues with sending products in for repairs directly to panasonic? It shouldn't take this long right?

In my eyes, they just wait for info from Japan service or development team rather, than a part...

When I attached 20mm f/1.7 - the difference is dramatic !
Now am waiting for legacy 55mm f/1.2 !

The local shop took it back with no restock fee. The GM said they have a bunch in stock. They opened another one and let me see if it did the same thing. It did. We tried the demo...it did the same thing. *SIGH* this camera looked so good on paper. The stills seemed fine but I didn't try doing a color card or anything to analyze it. Other than the 5d Mark II any other camera out there in the same neighborhood price wise and do 1080p and 720p 60fps? I've got some yashica lenses, if I can only afford a body.

Best of luck guys.

Every camera in this price bracket is going to have issues. The only other camera on the market near that price bracket that has 720/60 and 1080/24 is the 7D. It's about 1/3 more expensive with a lens, and I don't know if a yashica adapter exists for Canon mount.

The yashica lens is a m42 screw mount. :) They exist. I'm going to wait another year or so...rolling shutter/lean would be more crap to worry about for FX shots.

pineese,
I know exactly how you felt. I got very confused in the first minutes of shooting with the GH1 (tons of banding, etc). BUT! All the problems went away when I simply changed the settings to reasonable levels.
-Go back to the store
-Make sure your top dial is set to M(with a little camera next to it)
-Change your shutter speed to 60
-bring your iso to a reasonable level (you can get clean images at high isos, but banding can appear in the underexposed parts of the frame)
-adjust your exposure as necessary
-marvel at the clean and beautiful image

If I'm repeating stuff you already know, sorry. But I've been happily shooting with my GH1 for quite a few weeks and haven't had any banding creep into my footage.

I had done all of those things. I was trying to shoot some stuff for a haunted house where there is large contrast with the subject being well lit/parts partially under and the environment being a stop or two under and parts falling off...to what should be black. I was on Creative Movie Mode(full manual) ISO 200, shutter was 1/60 when on 720, 60fps mode. I tried every setting, I tried multiple cameras. Store clerks even saw what I was talking about. I'll wait. I already bought a boat load of tools with the money I got back :p

It was really noticeable when I shot 50% grey card with horizontal motion.
