low light romantic shoot

Finally decided to test the low light capabilities of the Canon t2i. Video is at bottom of the page... opening shot is black... easy to miss.

Shot with the Canon 100 f2 and Zeiss 50mm f1.7 at iso 800. I wasn't pushing for the extreme iso's, just trying for the best results in fairly well lit but night conditions.

All I can say is I'm pleased as punch. I didn't notice noise. Not on my 24 inch monitor anyways.

This little camera does it all... stills and video, and light to carry.

Security at the Vancouver Harbor Convention center did stop us initially. But when they saw my obviously amateur looking Rebel camera they let us shoot.

If we had a fully decked out Red One we would have been thrown out.

John... Vnguyen972.... thank you for your sincere compliments (blush). You've filled me with the desire to do more shooting.

A bit of background to this shoot:

I'm a volunteer press photographer for the film "Almost a Turkish Soap Opera", which will be shooting in

Vancouver in mid May. The camera they will be using is the Red, which just shipped last week.

Anyways, I suggested that I try shooting some night shots using the Canon t2i for the director's evaluation.

All this time I had assumed that they were going to use an early version of Red, which has (I assume) limited low light abilities.

Turns out that the Red is a new one, and someone on set mentioned the newer MX chip in it. So my hope that they might use my t2i as a B cam went poof. So much for my vanity.

While the director was impressed with the t2i's night images, but I expect the mx Red to blow it away. Then she told me they intended to film at 4k, anyways.

Thanks, guys (humming a happy tune to myself)

I liked it too.

Just out of curiosity, what did you shoot the stills with on that page? Was it the t2i as well?

Deepfocus88:

Yeppers.

The stills were shot with the 2ti as well, mostly with the Canon 100mm f2 and the Zeiss Contax 50mm 1.7, an old manual lens I got off Craigslist. I initially used the Tamron 17-50 2.8, but I'm getting an error message about bad contacts or something.

I can't get over the fact that I have a terrific video camera, as well as a still camera, for under a grand.

I let go of my HVX200 last week to an anxious buyer, and I am still waiting to see if that was a mistake.
