Low Light Ex1

Hello everyone,

I'm shooting a gig very soon in a nightclub with the Sony Ex-1.
I'm trying to figure out what the best settings will be for this atmosphere.
I'll be filming a dj with lots of different light changes and it will bright at points and dark at others, what settings would look most best for a nice sharp looking picture?

Picture profile settings?

Thanks Alot

Without being too specific I'd probably shoot at about 3dB and crush the black level a bit. Turn on the colour matrix for the coloured lights (more colour punch) and set the white balance manually through the picture profile preset option to about 2900-3000 (I find 3200 generally too yellow in skin tones). You can adjust 100-200K easily enough anyway. I don't mind CINE4 PP either but play around yourself a bit to see what you like.

Don't worry if you can't see everything clear as day, after all it is not day and the darkness is all a part of the atmosphere.

Focus will be hard as the auto isn't great in low light...

Guy, you're contradicting yourself - to crush the blacks, don't use Cine4 (or Std4, for that matter) - they both extend the blacks.

For low-light, use STD1 to crush the blacks along with the noise; if detail in the midrange is important, set it to STD4 instead. Cine gammas are best for plenty of light situations, as they tend to compress early thus "stealing" too much light in the mids

I don't mind the colours of CINE4, then I reduce the black level down independently, that isn't a contradiction, its customisation in my books.

That depends what light he's shooting under...it would only be too amber or yellow if you were shooting 3100k and below

He has said he is shooting in a nightclub, that will most likely make the lighting predominately tungsten filament based which will make around 3000K the ambiant white to the eye.

If you lower the CT under 3000 under tungsten it gets cooler (blue), not warmer (yellow).
