"Low Budget" an online comedy about filmmaking

@Nate: A lot of people didn't get the whole ninjas 1980s reference. Nice to see someone point it out :)

I just watched all 5 episodes and the thing is flat-out (flat-oat?) hilarious! The German "eye acting" segment is simply classic. Super job all around - writing, acting and editing in particular (and how much else that really matters is there?).

Thanks Ted! I appreciate your support. We just got the film on Amazon DVD, so hopefully that will translate to some sales and keep growing the film.

Anyone have any films about filmmaking they would like to share? Like shorts, or docs or student films. We have a FilmsAboutFilms page on our site and would love put your films on there.

LOL. I'm a bonafide Sho Kosugi and Michael Dudikoff fan. LOL. Did you know the "American Ninja" franchise lasted well into the 90s and there was a parady called "Irish American Ninja" which I haven't seen but it looks pretty funny. With Storm Shadow and Snakes in GI Joe and "Ninja Assassin" coming Ninjas are making a hard come back - heck they've been gone too long anyway. You'll see more soon I bet. In fact Sho Kosugi is in Ninja Assassin so I kinda have to see it now.

Also I love the way Jay forces his hand at the end in this one. That was so funny. I knew he was going to do that.

Hey, just watched all 5 of them last night and LOVED it! What type of camera and equipment did you use on this?

Just ordered the DVD. Got through 40 minutes of the stream and then it stopped working completely. It is too good to let that happen though so I ordered the DVD. -Matt

@davidlh Thanks! We shot the film on 2 DVX100 cameras in 24p mode. We edited the film on Final Cut Pro... 5, I think it was at the time. We also made all the effects and graphics on After Effects. Most of the time we had a boom mic and a wireless lav or 2 going for sound, which turned out pretty good considering we had such a small crew.

@Matt, sorry to hear about the Streaming issue :badputer: I guess there were some problems with the streaming encoding today, so the team at IndieFlix was working on it all day and that probably led to the dropout of the stream. They've worked out the kinks and the streaming version is back.

The streaming version is now in sync and fully functional, so anyone who wants to see the film right away you can now do so at:

If anyone experiences any further problems, please let me or Indieflix know and we will make sure you have a positive experience with the film and the Indieflix platform. I guess this is the problem with with calling the film "Low Budget"..

Watched the whole film, loved it. The documentary style really works for this film and it didn't feel forced at all. The performance were very natural and hilarious. Did you actually have a script or was it improv?

script

script

I was wondering about this too...

We did have a script for the film, but I would say that 75% of the dialogue that is in the movie was improvised... maybe even more. We had a script so that we could plan out what needed to happen in each scene and have a basis for the actors to work off of. Sometimes we needed to have certain things said, but in general I let the actors just improv and bring their own comedy to the dialogue. Some of the things that the actors improvised ended up as new scenes in the film and expanded beyond the original concept. For example, the Blitzfloben scene was something that Pat (the actor playing Jaye) came up with on the spot and then a few weeks later we actually shot the whole Blitzfloben mini film that is now in the movie.

Freakin' genius. The guy in the mini-movie is awesome. He's so serious about Blitzfloben.

@jjonasz Thanks for the reply! I just bought the DVD and will be anxiously awaiting it's arrival!

[EDIT] Also I forgot to ask...what was your budget on this film?

Thanks David! Hope you enjoy the full film, now you have to spot all the scenes that were cut from the webisode version :)

The budget, well, it was low. I can't really go into specifics, but under 50K. We basically had to pay for all the travel and equipment rental expenses, but got some good deals everywhere. The cast and crew were mostly working for free or token amounts.

I just got the DVD 2 days ago and was really excited to watch it, but there was a skipping problem so they have to send me a new one :(

I'm still looking forward to seeing it though!

@David, sorry about the DVD problem. If you have any further issues with the DVD, send me your address and I'll mail you a tested copy.

By the way, Part 7 "Special Effects" is now up, this one features the first action scene from Invasion Q :)
