FEATURE: Love Covers All

Hey everybody,

I'm in the middle of post-production on my second feature film called Love Covers All. The title has been swapped around a number of times due to issues with domain names, SEO performance, duplicate titles, etc. I shot the film with a modest sized crew in September 2013. 19 days instead of the scheduled 20. We shot mostly at night locally in Hall County, GA. The night shoots were tough, but we got through them. :) I also had a great cast and crew who made the process much easier. Everybody left production shaking hands, hugging, and looking forward to another! My last film was pretty successful financially, but it was quite a bit cheaper. This one involves more financial risk. Thankfully though, from money in the bank to release it looks like it'll be about 12-13 months…so the time to wait for the returns to begin is a lot shorter then the last film.

We shot on the Canon C300 with CP.2's. Worked wonderfully and allowed us to move quickly due to its size and great low-light capabilities. Dumping and backing up footage also was less painful due to its internal codec and the file sizes you get. Theatrical isn't really on the radar. I'm looking at a straight to DVD release in bookstores, hopefully Wal-mart, Online everywhere, Redbox (the last film did well there), VOD, and direct download on the films site. Netflix and things of that sort will come later on. I'm getting close to a polished edit and the film was sent out to about 60+ people for notes and comments, most of which were very positive and helpful. For those that care I'm cutting the film in Premiere CS6. I did some of the preliminary editing during production and most of the manual sync on my MacBook Air and have since moved onto my 2009 Mac Pro. DVD is primary delivery method with Blu-ray as a possibility and Digital an obvious yes. It's been an odd experience seeing the film already, since this time last year I was despairing over the script, finding the financing necessary, a baby on the way and how that might get in the way, etc. Making movies is difficult but this one felt like a walk in the park compared to the last. Not without its problems, and the process isn't over, but I can't wait to get this thing out there and see what folks have to say.

I'll keep the thread updated with any relevant info I have. I'm also happy to answer any questions as I move along into completion, marketing, and distribution. A thanks is in order again to DVXuser for being a great community for indie filmmakers. Thanks! :)

Awesome man, you really gotta know your target audience and cater your film around that to get a healthy return. It seems you've found that niche! Keep going. And keep letting God
do His thing with your work!

BLOG: Hope for Love Covers All in 2014
http://www.lovecoversallmovie.com/blog/hopes-for-love-covers-all-in-2014/

At our new years party last night everybody there asked to watch the films current cut and I agreed. About 12 folks in my living room watching it while I hid in the dining room terrified lol. Thankfully everyone enjoyed the film a lot and had lots of great things to say. Dozens have seen it but that was the first time being in a room with people of different demographics and hearing what they thought. What a nightmare LOL!

Heh, the first screening is always a terrifying experience, especially for a director. You spend months in the editing room, but that first time it screens with a bunch of strangers - wow, that's intense and can be traumatic. You sit there in the audience, and suddenly all the flaws of the film jump out at you like a fist to the face, over and over again. You walk out drenched in sweat.

By the by, don't ever let people talk you into showing a rough cut. No matter how they swear up and down that they can compensate in their mind for things not being finished, music not quite there etc., they never, ever can. This is a well known thing. Especially financial backers - they'll be disappointed and first impressions are hard to shake off. This is an iron rule, no matter how experienced the viewer, they simply cannot compensate. Don't do it, if you can help it.

Best of luck!

No worries, it wasn't a rough cut. That was only shown to a few folks via Vimeo. This was a near polished cut missing some VFX, final sound, and some shots missing replaced with title cards (close ups of a phone and things like that). So while they had to make a few leaps while watching it wasn't anywhere near the rough cut. I learned on the last film to wait as long as humanly possible for a screening for the average joe. It's always scary regardless…but necessary to get some feedback from someone other then a filmmaker before you lock the cut.

Kyle,

Congratulations on nearly completing another feature. Would love to meet some time as I'm in Atlanta as well. Talk filmmaking etc.

Been working on the trailer lately and DVD Cover concepts. Lots of hard work, long hours…once I get jammin it's hard to stop. Not sure how I could work as an indie filmmaker without social media. I've been sending out constant revisions to dozens of folks for feedback variety and other things. The internet is wonderful! :)

Been testing out DVD cover designs with the target audience lately. I think I've found something they'll like. Also have sent in covers to contact at Redbox for feedback. Going to design something totally custom for them if need be. Pitching officially to Redbox/Walmart in a month or two.

Post-production is going well...locking portions of the edit now so my composer can get started while I try to gather some last pickups and missing inserts ASAP. Lots to do :)

Starting to get my marketing strategy in order as well. Did I mention there was a lot to, lol?

68 days before I have to ship the final master of my film to replicators. Currently talking to Redbox and Walmart and Christian Bookstore contacts. Lots of things going on! Trailer mix/scoring in progress.

Some big news is our fan page on Facebook getting close to reaching 400,000. This is going to be a massive benefit in marketing the film. I'm very excited to put this to use since we only have 10,000 when the last film released. It's one of the largest pages for an indie film company that I"m aware of, and the largest brand page in the faith-retail space not attached to a theatrical release, best selling book, or big celebrity. Huge responsibility to manage it the last number of years but keeping it healthy has paid off!

I can't wait to see what this little indie movie can do! :D I have 2 months to get a TON done on this film...nerve-wracking but I can't wait to see how it flies.

Congrats Kyle, but you have 400K on standing firm and 2K on Love covers all. Is it the same thing in the end? :)

Actually Facebook has accepted my rebranding request so the Standing Firm page will become the Praise Pictures page, my company. All future marketing campaigns will be run through here. I'm going to leave the Love Covers All page dormant or delete it completely. :) Starting off with 400,000 to market the next movie and putting my marketing money into growing that even more will be a huge advantage for the release...

Please help and complete this survey...please consider who this film is made for when you vote. :) http://www.praisepictures.com/cover-design-survey/

Working like a dog to get this film completed. VFX being done, score in progress, lost my sound-mixer to another production and now securing another...securing distribution...tons of deals hanging in the balance that could radically impact the profitability of the film. So much at stake...it's a crazy time. Everything else has been cake work by comparison. Talking to Redbox and Walmart right now. Big things in motion...just trying to be patient!

This film is coming out in the fall...bottom line. I can't wait to get it out there!

Thanks for voting Martay! Had about 176 entries I think...somewhere in there. Good results so it was helpful.

Lots of great stuff going on. High stress time lol. Distribution is always the hardest part of the process. Could get a phone call that could pay for the entire film, next day find out there's some disaster. It's a rough ride but worth it. Redbox and Walmart...here I come! I hope. ;)
