C200: Loupe for touchscreen vs. dedicated EVF?

Hi guys,

Wondering what people's thoughts are on simply adding a loupe (like the Zacuto Z-Finder) to the touchscreen, versus using a dedicated EVF like the Gratical.

Are there any standout pros/cons to one or the other?

Cheers

You wouldn't be able to use the touchscreen as a touchscreen with a loupe on it. Maybe that isn't a big deal if you are using the C200 shoulder-mounted since you wouldn't be able to use it that way so easily anyway.

Another consideration if you were to use it shoulder mounted is how difficult it may be to get the loupe situated properly in front of your eye. Actually it seems unlikely that you could use a z-finder loupe on the touchscreen, they probably aren't the same screen size -- and Zacuto seems to make things difficult to adapt without using their products for the fairly specialized uses they were intended for.

I have a Zacuto EVF pro, which is the Zacuto monitor and loop attached. I haven't experimented with trying to use it in a shoulder mounted situation, but it isn't going to be a simple matter getting that thing way out in front to meet your eye on the C200. There have been a few threads on this subject, and I remember someone who explained how he was able to use the Z-finder, but it may not have been an ideal setup. That said, there's probably a way that's cheaper than getting a Gratical. Maybe the Zacuto Axis Mini (but is $400+ ?)

I too have the EVF Pro and I can get it into the right position for shoulder mounted shooting with the C200 using an Ultralight Control Systems arm. But it's weight, another battery source unless you are running D-Tap batteries and usually when I need to use the EVF Pro, I am looping HDMI out of my Ninja Blade, which means no overlays or waveform from the camera. The one HUGE, not already mentioned advantage of using the loupe on the touchscreen is you have all of your overlays and tools available which you may not if you have to be going to an external recorder like I do for certain clients and shoots.

I don't see why it'd be a problem, as long as you can get it in position.

Touching the actual screen for focus changes is the only reason I touch the screen, but this might not be a likely scenario for you and therefore a non-issue.

I think you'll be fine but make sure you don't also need the longer cable - https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1184818-REG/canon_0887c001_un_10_unit_cable_for.html

I have the Z-Finder and love it, but I will give a caveat - I probably wouldn't love it if I didn't also have all the other Zacuto accessories that make it rock solid and fully adjustable. Solves a problem really well, but also introduces a bunch of new ones (buying expensive accessories, off balance heavier rig, etc.). 98% of the time I'm using it with my EasyRig or on sticks so those things don't matter much, but if I have to strip my kit down I just ditch the LCD altogether and go just camera viewfinder.

Not sure how much I would like it just by itself. Also, I never got into the habit of using touch screen to begin with so i don't miss it.

When I'm really operating, I want a real VF. Most of the loupe set-ups I've seen and used are a hindrance.

They truly are. They're all kind of a hack, I hate the one on the FS7. The best EVF I've put to my eye is the $6K Canon, it's really comfortable and looks amazing, besides optical VFs on film cameras of course.
I played with but never shot with the Zacuto Gratical and the new Kameleon, they look promising.

I love my Gratical HD. Not sure why I waited so long to buy it (actually, I do... the crazy cost). Combined with their Axis Mini mount, it's like my C200 has a real ENG viewfinder.
