I want to build a custom shoulder mount rig, but it all depends on whether I get a loup or a monitor for my T2i.

I personally think the monitor would be better (like the Marshall) The reason is, I can see what is being filmed and if I have a focus puller, he/she can see too. Experienced, or not so experienced - meaning they might need to see what they are doing. But it doesn't have HD-output when recording. If I have a loup, only I can see what is being filmed.

Its too bad I cant use both the loup and the monitor.

What would you get for the T2i?

Both. Get a 7" or 8: liliput monitor which go for around $180-$200+ and get a viewfinder which can range from $70-$300+.

Honestly they are both used for different situations therefore your can't decide which one, because just like all tools certain ones I required for certain jobs.

I totally agree, it depends on the nature of the project. Sometimes you have everything set up and planned out, and sometimes you're shooting on the fly with a shoulder mount

Well, I'm speaking of planned shoots not so much run n' gun.

The liliput doesn't have HD or any other features the Marshall has, like Peaking & False Colour.

Oh boy. The poll results are always coming to a tie.

Well, I want to ask. When would you use a Loupe over a monitor and a monitor over a loupe?
*I dont want to take the sun glare into account as you can have a hood for the monitor and it would also block off the sun glares.

I use a combination of the two, If the shot is static i prefer the loupe. If im on a dolly or tracking or things of that nature, i prefer a monitor.

Like everybody said, both are useful depending on the shot.
However I can think several situations where a monitor would be a MUST and a loupe would be USELESS:
low/high angle shots, dolly/slider/jib shots, steadycam shots...did I miss anything?
Anyway you know where my vote went...

Hm... So far I have been doing a lot of moving shots. Most on the shoulder mount; like walking running, etc. like in war movies. Every once in a while I do stationary shots but a lot less than the shoulder mount stuff. If doing a lot of shoulder mount shots, all movements, and less stationary, would you say the monitor then?

LOL, back to a tie. I want to get both, but on my shoulder mount, I would have to have an extra setup which will cost an additional $100-200. So, I'm looking at getting one.

Thanks for the input so far guys!

But remember! This is for the T2i not the 7D.
It does not have HD output when recording. The monitor will be good before shooting, but since I am doing lots of moving shots it wont be in HD. I will be staring at a smaller image in lower res. too.

Ive never seen how it looks like while shooting so I cant say if it that bad or not. Hopefully it not that big of an issue. But trying to focus on a small image might be harder. If I need to focus while moving which will happen as I doubt I will be using large aperture all the time.
BTW, does anyone know if you can use the peaking filter while recording to help focus? or is this only possible before shooting?

?

Have you ever used the t2i? The reason I ask is you either know how to use your gear or don't. If you can focus on a small lcd screen which is 3.2 why in the world could you not be able to focus on a 7" or 8" screen even if it were cropped?

Your thinking way to hard into this dude, just get a loupe since it seems that is what you are leaning to anyways. Then get a cheap $200 monitor like I told you. Your eyes need to be the judge no some focus assist or peak level. Everything I do I can just tell by the way it looks, it's either a God giving talent or maybe I just do the work and get it done.
