Lost Children - Mark Harris

I've used MB before in Vegas. Not sure if I could use it here, because the looks I need have to be completely custom. The guys shot everything great, but for this film, the looks are actually integral to the story. I mean I guess there are a lot of places where the looks do not have to be custom, but if I am doing some in Color, I might as well do them all, because the simpler ones can be easily saved and applied to many clips.

I could do it all with FCP I'm sure, but it's a good chance to learn Color.

If you use MB Looks Builder you can get the same custom results you are looking for without the worry of losing any transitions and speed changes. I've never used Vegas with MB Looks, and I'm not sure which version you used, but the current version has detailed customization. Color is the defacto tool for color control, but right now it is overkill for anything I do below a feature shot on film or 2K+ HD cameras.

Well at this point, I've spent enough to get this movie up and running, so I'm sticking with what I bought already :)

i gotta do more research on color correction for Premiere CS4 beyond just the basic stuff. Is it me, or are more people in this fest looking at color grading and color correction and other fests? might be just me....

Maybe. We did a lot for RPDM, and I've always done it to some degree in the past. But it's often just putting a film curve on a shot, if the lighting is already good.

Like I said, it's important to this one, so...

Understood. Are you using any of the diffusion settings in Color? It can do wonders for skin. I assume on the RED footage you are getting very fine detail. Maybe too much. You can apply this diffusion setting in ColorFX after creating your primary and secondary corrections.

I'm going to start posting some of my experiments either tonight or tomorrow.

Thanks for the FCP screen capture. I like what you are doing and know its going to be great. You have good taste.

Well the RED at 4K is like nose-hair detail, yeah. We all noticed a chip in the actress' tooth that we'd never seen before. I've known her for two years and never noticed it. But when mastered down to 1080 seems to look pretty normal, I think. I mean people don't look gross or anything.

But I may be playing with diffusion for effect. Would love to see what tests you come up with. Also working with blurs some for effect.

Where is your film at right now?

Well people, after careful consideration, we are out. Going to keep on this film and finish within the next month, but there is absolutely no way we are going to be able to do this film right by Monday.

More details soon.

Even for an Exhibition entry?
I guess due to the length there was just too much sound and effects work to be done? Oh well. I look forward to seeing this bad boy once you are ready for the big release.

There is not enough time to get it right. That means tweaking the timing, sound work, exploring the ideas about the VFX and coloring I have. I don't want to put out anything that is not really up to snuff, so no rushing. Will be done within this month.

I was toying with the idea of releasing one scene for the fest, which falls into 6 min. But it would be incomplete as a story, and still needs a lot of work...

Follow the advice you gave me, it was sound.

Good luck with this project either way. Can't wait to see it.

I would love to see a work-in-progress showing and corresponding blog, to see how the film evolves in post. Stripe some timecode on there so people will know it's not the "real deal" yet. I'm sure it will still be better than many other entries.

It's unfortunate when promising projects have to bow out, but I can understand... It usually takes me 2-3 months just to write the damn thing, which doesn't leave much time for production, let alone post. Maybe one fest a year should be longer? 12 minutes with 6-8 months to make it.

Although, I'd probably still leave everything to the last minute no matter when the deadline was.
