Ok so i thought this would be a good approach to lossless 24p workflow, tell me what you tihnks guys.
  1. Captured clips w/ HDVsplit.
  2. Remove pull down w/ TMPEnc 4.0 and export as lagarith lossless codec [what mode should i use RGBA,RGB(default),YUY2,YUY12].
  3. Import files in to premier/EDIT.
  4. Export finished project [but what should i export as if i wanted to keep a master ?? as lagarith lossless again ??].
lagarith increases the size of the file by about 10-fold doesnt it.

Regards Marty.

There is no need to convert it to a lossless codec since it is recorded lossy using HDV compression in the first place. I think using the same compression all the way will produce better results by avoiding re-encoding.

i though i have found with using mpeg2 codec evan at 25MB HDV standard, there is generation loss with each encode.

Not quite. You're compressing a compressed codec, so you'll lose data. All codecs today are lossy, but if you want to retain all the original information then uncompress .avi is your only shot, even though the filesize is huge.

Do you think it is worth the trouble. Not only for the size but than re-compressing that avi file takes a while. Do you notice a difference in video quality?

Uncompressed avi (downconverted to SD) looks awesome, you have to see it to believe it. I always go uncompress and then do my encoding from there. Going to MPEG for DVD I definitely noticed a bit of softening. Going to h.264 for web looks great and seems to retain 98% of the original sharpness. But if I were to want to recompress it in the future or use in other projects (like a demo reel) then I would always want to have an uncompress version on hand.

I will give it a try. What is your workflow.

I edit in Premiere. Strip the pulldown using Cineform, edit in a Cineform timeline. Then import the project into a 24p SD timeline and shrink each clip to 45% to fit. Then render out using the Microsoft avi option with Compressor set to None. If I need to go to DVD I use Adobe Encore, encode at either CBR 8mbps or VBR 7mbps depending on space requirement. If I go to h264 then I use QT Pro with a bitrate of around 1500 kbps.
