Loosing quality when capturing

An apology in advance if this is a silly question.

When I view footage straight from the camera on my television it looks great. When I capture (using Log and Transfer) it looses this. I have tried playing captured footage through the television and it still doesn’t look the same as straight from the camera.

Has anyone any suggestions on this?
 
What procedure are you using to play captured footage through the television? Is it the cam's HDMI port?

What television with what connection? Are you using a HDMI connection to a television that accepts HDMI?

It appears you are you using a Macintosh, and what connection are you using to play it to a television?

Help us out with specifics?
 
Sorry, the specifics.

When playing from the camera through the television (Sony KDL-40S3000) I use the HDMI OUT terminal to the HDMI IN on the television.

I capture with USB card reader, straight into FCP using Log and Transfer, import settings are Apple ProRes 422.

When playing from the computer (Apple MacBook Pro) I use VGA terminal to the television the VGA terminal (the television has one).

The hdmi direct to the tv is uncompressed hd footage I believe. When you log and transfer there will be a loss in quality due to the compression of avchd but in prores should look great on the computer. Outputting from the macbook with vga will probably not be a good representation of the quality of the footage.

if the settings are the same as the what you recorded, and used prores 422(hq) or the new proress 4444, it should give you pretty good results.

probably that's the problem, check your tv manual to see what happens when you connect through vga, the tv prob goes to an sd resolution, you know you can go from dvi to hdmi right?, that would prob give you better results when trying to preview.
 
DVI makes a huge difference over VGA, especially the bigger the display gets.

We use a 42" samsung LED TV for a broadcast muti-view and tried both connections, and dvi made a night/day difference in sharpness and overall look.

HDMI and DVI are comparable, except hdmi has a smaller connector and embedded audio.
 
HDMI is a HD transfer format out of the cam.

VGA is huge leap downward in quality.

Use an appropriate HD in/out card.

Even DVI out of the DVI port will look quite a bit better.

But remember that the canvas is a low rez proxy.
