LOOPER -- new, original scifi from Rian Johnson

Amr... it is a brand new story, written by Rian Johnson. Not adapted or based on any existing works or IP. It is original, fact, end of discussion.

Drawing visual or even thematic comparisons to other films or stories is inevitable, and does not invalidate it's originality. Also fact, end of discussion.

saying 'fact' and 'end of discussion', that's your "argument". that's not very mature.

i guess there is no reason to continue this, but.

how would you differentiate cloning from original work? with an example if you will.

It's not "my argument", it is fact. That is why I said it. You are dismissing an original film for being "unoriginal", and it doesn't make any sense.

As for your question, I am not quite sure what you mean. How do you differentiate influence, resemblance, or homage from original work?

page crashed when posting, and i don't feel like retyping all that again, so i'll make this quick.

i said 'cloning from original'. you saw something very clear and interpreted as another <- that's denial.

an original work take a premise, story structure or genre and transcends the story into something unique. (i won't retype the rest of that paragraph and go straight to the examples)

courtroom drama,
to kill a mocking bird <- original
a time to kill <- original, almost same subject matter, villain, henchmen, almost same setting and location and same genre
witness for the prosecution <- original, although it is a noir film from the noir film era with noir film sets, lighting, femme fetale, double crossing, love triangles, ...etc.
boston legal

horror
night of the living dead
dawn of the dead <- same subject matter, group of survivors, that reluctant ahole popping in every survivor film, zombies.

disaster movie
Poseidon adventure
towering inferno
2012 <- clone

another sci-fi example
terminator 1 <- original
terminator 2 <- original, and notice that it's a sequel
terminator 3 <- clone
terminator series <- clone

star wars 4, 5,6 <- original
star wars prequels

Amr, your original comments seemed incredibly over the top negative based on little information, which is why it provoked the reaction it did. You are entitled to your opinion, just try and express it with a little more tact and finesse. Perhaps english isn't your first language so something is being lost, I'm not sure, but I think it has more to do with how you are saying things, not what you are saying...As for the film's originality or lack thereof, I don't think the information presented in the trailer is enough to make a judgement on. It contains a premise with elements we've seen previously, but they can be taken in a direction we haven't seen before. I think the look of the film is intriguing, the casting interesting, and with the knowledge of who wrote and directed it, I'm betting it's not going to be the usual Hollywood fare.

it's my 4th language, but still, everyone says my views are over the top, or negative, but i gave details, and it's from the trailer, footage from the film. it's not a matter of opinion. i can point out things from the actual footage provided about the film, or that short interview.

no one is arguing the details or mentioning the film at all, your just attacking me for no reason, i gave details, examples, what more would you need. it's 3 pages and no one mentioned any details about the clip at all.

At this point, this thread is just producing repetitive arguments.

Let's move on people.

Thank you.

Amr, I was not attacking you. I was sincerely trying to HELP you. You may not realize your comments are coming off as rude because of the language issue, but they are. That's what I was saying. I specifically said it's not so much what you are saying but how that is antagonizing some people. I myself could read between the lines, others may not.

Ever since Inception I've always felt like Joseph Gordon-Levitt is the next big action star. Big fan of him. Glad he's doing a film like this.

Also seems to be an original script in Hollywood, wow... looks very cool.

Cant agree with you more although I really disliked him as a teen actor...
But really loved his later role in Killshot !
Glad to see him doing well.

The make-up alone on Jo-Go-Lev is amazing... I wouldn't have even known it was him. Looks like a great flick!

Excellent film. My only complaint is that I wanted more of it. I felt like some of the storytelling choices were dictated by their relatively limited budget. Not to say what was done wasn't done really well, I just felt they could have gone even further with the concept and the world they created. As is, half the film takes place in a fairly mundane location which is less interesting than the other half. What takes place there is necessary, and dramatically compelling, but as a backdrop it's a little drab. Still a pretty great flick though.

I was definitely pumped to see this from the first trailer I saw. Went to see it last night and it was pretty good! I have to admit, knowing that shane carruth was involved at one point with this project- I was expecting some mind bending time travel paradoxes that only resolve upon watching the movie multiple times and dissecting the plot scene by scene. Unfortunately there's none of that here and is definitely not a "thinking" film. But nonetheless, it's a great little sci fi action drama.

Yeah there's paradoxes galore in this thing but, I think they mostly get away with them. They make a point of stating that the consequences of time travel are messy, and truth be told, if time travel were ever to be possible, I don't think it would follow the neat rules everyone thinks it would. I think the film makes sense even though it's illogical. Anyway, the film has much more to offer than just the time travel gimmick. I forgot to mention how good the kid's performance was in this. It's an aspect of the story that is barely hinted at in the trailers and promotions so it's a big surprise. He was genuinely precocious and spooky. You bought that he was who they said he would be.

Saw it today, I thought it was amazing. Best film of the year so far!

I disagree about wanting there to be more paradoxes or mind-bending time travel. To me that would have gone away from the point, which was about some very basic emotions. Often times science fiction stories can overwhelm human emotions with their fancy gadgets and complex concepts. While I love sci-fi like that, I think for this particular story, the way it was told was perfect. I understand wanting "more", but I actually feel that a bigger budget would have harmed the film. I thought it was fantastic because it was contained, small. This really let the emotions and humor come through.

I think they could have gone bigger and still retained that stuff, but when it comes down to it, it was that they spent so much time at such a mundane location, the farm, that made the film feel slightly cheap. They spent half the movie in this visually cool future setting, that I really didn't understand WHY all that story had to happen at the farm. Felt like they were trying to contain their budget rather than their being an organic reason for it. I mean it's not like it doesn't make sense in the context, but that stuff could just as easily have taken place at a more visually interesting location in this cool future world they created.

My interpretation of the farm and crops was the symbolism of cyclical birth and and death. I may be reaching here, but crops are burned down to make way for new crops. This is hinted at with the girl stating that they can't burn the fields because she needs them to seed next years crops. This movie had a very strong theme about cycles, reoccurring and changing. And farms and agriculture are about cycles. They could have used another location perhaps, or a different symbol, but i think it served its purpose at least and wasn't just a random use of a cheap location.

I need to watch it again. I didn't really like it, however I keep thinking about it.

I like this explanation.

Thought the movie was pretty okay, but like Roman (LINEARX) I did go in thinkin' that, since Carruth was involved, my mind was slated to be melted. It didn't happen, and at one point I even made up something more complex and realized that no... it was just straight forward. lol.

Nevertheless, I appreciated most of the movie for what it was, and really commend the character development. Really.. REALLY love the duality displayed, and how the main character doesn't arc yet DOES arc at the same exact moment. Very very cool.

SPOILER ALERT:

I thought the more gruesome moment in the movie, afterward, was a bit extraneous and mostly for spectacle which is cool. That was the only "issue" I really took with it.
