Hey guys, if you can direct me to anything you may have shot with the nikon manual lenses that would be awesome!

considering the ai/ais series lenses to go with the tokina.

while i do not have anything shot with the GH2 as of yet (very recent new owner), i used nikon primes quite extensively with my 550D, and held onto most of them for use with my GH2. they are great lenses for the money, quite sharp and quality build

i know you wanted an example from a GH2, but heres a nikon nifty fifty wide open on a 550D, lapse was done in movie mode

Looks great! I've seen the ai/ais lenses on the 5d and really like them. Also seen some on the af100. But my kit will contain probably 2 x 550d/t2i and a gh2.....and for the life of me can't seem to find any real footage with gh2/ais combo. I mean everything looks a lil soft on the canons regardless so im curious how even an unhacked gh2 will look with the ais lenses.

Any chance i could persuade you to do a quiky test?....lol.

LOL! thanks man.....if i get the lenses ill credit you on my first project......like "lens wrangler" or something ha, ha.

no problem at all, im happy to help a fellow film enthusiast whenever i can! one thing i should clarify first, the only actual nikon prime i used in the video was the 50mm f1.8 series E, the rest of the primes are nikon MOUNT, but made by 3rd part manufacturers. the first lens is a Hoya 25-42mm f3.5 macro, which has surpisngly good optics, (banana and shot of the nikon 50mm) the second lens is a vivitar Series 1 28mm f1.9, (shots of the vaporizer/log looking thing) which is also has pretty good optics considering its a 3rd party manufacturer. The last shots are with the nikon 50mm, (the dogs, and the shots of me in the mirror)

all lenses were shot wide open and i used smooth -2 down the charts. cant remember the individual iso settings, but none exceeded 1600 for certain.

IMO 3rd party lenses can be quite good some times, and can be had for extremely cheap, do a little hunting around, you never know when you'll happen upon a gem. Its best to stick to known brands though if you must have the sharpest glass available. i actually do not mind a lens that isn't tack sharp on the GH2, especially if you are going for a more cinematic feel, which i feel these vintage lenses do a good job at replicating.

dude, you rock. Liked the look of them all but that nikon....man it looks nice.

thanks a lot makes my choice easy.......my one gripe with the gh2 has been the contrasty image, but it looks like that is really reduced with the older manual lenses like leica and nikon that have a more gradual contrast.

I don't have experience in Nikon glass but I have one Nikon Mount Tokina AT-X 35-70 zoom lens with constant aperture f2.8. I also have the same lens in Canon FD mount. I can recommend it, it is sharp even at full aperture. These frame grabs are from a GH1, though, so not the sharpest: http://www.fourseasonshd.com/cgi-bin/csvsearch.pl?db=db4&tp=tp18&search=gh131

At the bottom of the page are full resolution frame grabs all shot aperture wide open. It was interesting to learn about the Hoya lens in the previous post by Stroh. It is assumed that Hoya makes the optics for Tokina.

Even if this was not asked, I will throw in a sample from two Minolta MD lenses, both excellent legacy lenses for the price: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yh8cKMYiftI
