F35: Looking to trade my RED ONE MX for an F35

I can recommend the F3. Its cheap and very capable. Its not as good as the F35 in IQ but its smaller, cheaper and better in lowlight. So if you do any docu or can't afford much light, it could be better in some situations than the F35. BUT: F35 just looks better and the way the highlight go out is WAY ahead of the F3.

Anyway, here is a music video I just shot (in like 8 hours) with the F3 in prores HQ:

wow that looks so gorgeous!

What don't you like about the RED One?

Before making this dangerous jump. You should understand what you don't like about your current system and whether the new system has them or not.

The f3 or f35 are not ultimately better or worse than you Red One, benefits both ways, make sure you don't find yourself downgrading to get benefits you don't need/want.

So what don't you like about it?

I made a list to help:
here's where the f35 is better:
1. better highlight handling
2. better color
3. more accurate motion
4. 50 FPS at still super 35mm crop - better motion for 50 FPS - not going into 3k crop mode

here's where it's not as good (F35)

1. you need to grade it well - it doesn't have an easy way to make it look nice like the red one has redgamma3 and dragoncolor which is a pretty easy LUT to put on and it looks nice
2. there is grain in the image even at 400 ASA a little more than red one I think -
3. I don't think it resolves as much detail so for VFX it is not as clean as red one mx

Red One MX weaknesses
1. it takes 2 minutes to boot up
2. menu system is weird, but I guess the f35 is a weird menu system too
3. blackshading takes months, if not years

Red One MX strengths
1. skin tones are very easy and natural in daylight
2. but trying to saturate with color it gets weird
3. maybe too sharp and unnatural -
4. you can easily put on nikon lenses and use smaller lenses

it really depends on the person

I own both the f35 and red ones. I guess take them both for a spin and see

also try coloring both

here's a quick test I made messing around. It's a pretty crappy test - the skintones look bad, but hey who cares - use a test chart next time I will

I'd argue it's quite simple to grade f35 footage, as long as you have the correct luts - first and foremost macgregor's, but there are a plethora of slog luts out there, aimed at all sorts of looks. Also, ACES works wonders!

Wanted to update you all and let you know my RED ONE MX sold and I purchased a Sony F3 W/ Blackmagic Hyperdeck Shuttle for recording out the SDI. After looking at my research and what I needed, I think the F3 is a better fit for me. I'd really like to own an F35 down the line (as well as a plethora of other cams) but the F3 will do for now. Thanks everyone for your help and info. :)

Well done and enjoy your new camera. The F3 is not so bad if you are aware of its limitations and have a good rig for it. Main thing to watch out for is the rolling shutter.

Welcome to the world of new F3 owners in 2015! Nice to see it still getting a fresh breath of air all these years later after 2011, let me know how you find it vs the R1 :)
