F35: Looking to trade my RED ONE MX for an F35

Mike Krumlauf

Award Winning Filmmaker
I'm looking for someone who would be willing to trade a sony f35 with 444 option, monitor and battery system for my red one mx with everything listed below

RED ONE MX READY TO SHOOT KIT - less than 800hrs on the body, serial #6611
-RED ONE MX Body with CF Module Installed
-Red base plate with shoulder dovetail and cheese plate pieces along with large 18(i believe)mm rails
-full top handle unit with rails
-red quickplate with v mount battery mount
-130Wh V Mount Battery with Charger (can charge 2 batteries at once)
-Nikon & PL Mount with screws
-RED PRO 7' LCD Monitor with Lemo Cable
-Sigma 18-250 F3.5 Nikon Lens
-62mm Vari ND Filter for Sigma Lens
-3x3 Matte Box with 2 stage filter holder for Sigma Lens
-Cheap follow focus unit (gets the job done, basically throwing this in for free)
-Firewire 800 CF Card Reader
-Timecode Cable for RED ONE MX (never used this, it was given to me by a friend for free)
-3 RED CF Cards (2 16GB and 1 8GB)

If nobody wants to make a trade, what is your asking price for camera+accessories? I don't need glass, mattebox or follow focus. Only the necessary gear to make it shoot ready. Been looking a lot on Ebay, I've always liked the original Red One image, not to mention the prices are relatively low these days.

at this point maranfilms, i am not looking to sell it, only to trade. I love my RED ONE MX but i am very intrigued by the F35 and i know that im not in the financial ballpark to afford anything better then either camera given they are both around the same price point now, anything else would be a step down from what i own now.

Wait for the BMD URSA Mini 4.6K! ;-) That won't be a step down.

Though I was never too impressed by the RED ONE MX, either from what I've seen or when I've shot with it. Prefer my Sony PMW-F3

What about the F3 do you like over the red?

Let's just keep in mind the the Sony PMW-F3 and the Sony F35 are entirely different cameras, and small typos can confuse the conversation. Also, the Sony F35 is 4:4:4 by default, no additional licenses required. You do however either need a compatible docking recorder or the IF box. I don't recommend buying an F35 kit that doesn't include the IF box.

As for liking Sony F35 over Red - it just looks pretty. And I like the Log workflow compared to Red's raw workflow. The specular highlight handling is impressive. And, you can record to a variety of video formats and don't need to process raw data in post.

What about the F3 do you like over the red?

PMW-F3 is lighter, way better in low light, cheaper, more ergonomic (such as built in NDs, just to list one of many ways), and better featured.

Have 4K raw is a non issue for me. Quite happy with 10bit 444 s-log FHD 60FPS

how is the dynamic range compared to the MX sensor in the red? What type of recording device do you need to get the 444 option? would i be able to sell my red kit and have enough money to move to a ready to shoot 444 f3 with a lens and everything?

Mike,

Do not drop your RED One for a F3. For a F35, most definitely. But not for a F3. Unless what you do is corporate and the like. You didn't mention what you do. But I have the feeling you are an indie filmmaker. If so, stick to the RED One instead of going for a F3.

If you want a F3 later chances are you would not even need to sell your RED package. They are selling for under $2,000 used and come next year probably even less.

But if you really want to get out of the RED One and stay under $15,000-20,000, specially if you are an indie filmmaker, the F35 is your best bet. I my opinion the only bet. I'm not sure you caught my reply to you in the other thread. But a top F35 package will get you in Alexa territory and for an extremely good price compared to the ARRI.

Do not swap a Red One for a F3 IMO a waste of money , skin tone rendition , dynamic range and bit rate.

However F35 different issue . The best way forward sell the red & then buy a f35 package as a swap is unlikely.

list it on eBay, there are people in other countries who still like older gear because their workflow is already setup for it. You have a world-wide market who doesn't know the secret.

Here, we all the know the secret:

When the Red One was released a package was probably 30-25k brand new, I don't remember anymore. The F35 cost $250,000 it's weight in gold literally, you could of bought a nice airplane for the same price.

Maybe there's something worth a little bit more inside the F35 than the Red One?

But here's the bigger secret, no one outside of this small pool of F35 owners cares about the value inside an F35. On the open market a Red One is worth about the same as an F35 package. Mostly because Red One supports 4k files. Take advantage of this loophole, sell your Red One to a person who thinks it is worth 4k. Buy a complete F35 package for 5k by doing a little hunting. DON'T buy a F3, seriously, I don't care what people say about how it's smaller and has SLOG, it was a nice camera. Once again you are looking at a cheap plastic camera designed for professional wedding shooters, not even close to the league of the F35. Nothing now a days is designed like the F35 was, hey throw out this million dollar platter of CCD's until we find one that is up to snuff.

Panavision and Sony had a skunkworks to design a camera to replace the best capture format of the last 50 years: FILM. They did not care about money spent on this camera, don't be fooled by similar numbers and screen grabs. You have found the F35 for a reason, because it has what NOTHING else does. It has LOTs of pitfalls but that does not change the fact that it is a magical camera and the greatest deal of the century for filmmakers right now.

If you want a FS5 to make money I wouldn't argue with you. I make my living shooting video for other people who get to make all the decisions. Fast modern cameras are expected to have high speed, low light, built in ND, fit on a Movi.

But if you are looking to buy a digital cinema camera of the past because they have finally hit a record low from past generations of HD cameras, they all suck at low light next to a A7S, The F35 should be your only choice.

It blows my mind that in this day, where the F35 camera head is so freaking cheap, that you would consider anything else in that price range.

And yes we will all be buying the F65's when this thing happens again in 3 years. Thanks SONY, your model of new cameras every year has created an incredible by-product of cheap amazing cameras for us brave few willing to ignore the new.

I will list on ebay within the week, but anyone who wants first dibs, the package is 4,200 now and includes a red drive with cable.

Lol, no, F3's are not going for under $2K. A BASIC package with a single charger and an old battery are in the $2500 range at best. You cant just go on ebay and find the lowest price on some piece of junk with no accs. and make a statement. Add for at least three batteries, a GOOD Canon or Nikon adapter, cards and more and you are no where close to $2K. Add a Ninja or Odys and you are well over.

F3= Best all around camera (and a true 10bit camera) for $3K-ish and covers you on docs, corporate gigs, shorts and all in between.

VinceinLA, I personally purchased my F3 for US$1.2K
Just yesterday a friend of mine in the USA got offered a F3 package (3x batteries, rails set up, body armour, three adapters for FZ Mount, multiple SxS cards) for US$2K (but even that he sees as too high for him, and is bargaining him down).

Ninja 2 is now under three hundred dollars brand new, so hardly costs anything to tap into start using its 10bit goodness.

how is the dynamic range compared to the MX sensor in the red? What type of recording device do you need to get the 444 option? would i be able to sell my red kit and have enough money to move to a ready to shoot 444 f3 with a lens and everything?
Dynamic range is a bit better (as from memory I believe they were already close to each other pre S log update? Thus now F3 with S log should be clear ahead). To get 444 you'd use the Video Devices PIX-E5 ($1.4k).
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1137279-REG/video_devices_pix_e5_5_4k_recording.html

However I kinda feel 444 is overkill in 98% of cases, and 10bit 422 recorders are very very cheap.
BMD Video Assist = $495
Samurai Blade = $495
Blade 2 = $295

You could sell your R1 MX kit and have heaps left over after buying an F3.
But I'd agree with the others when they say in the eyes of many it would be viewed as a "downgrade" because people have an obsession with 4K and raw.

Really depends a lot on what your needs/preferences/uses are, and if you want to make a bunch of savings with extra cash left over to put into say lighting gear or audio, or simply to keep in the bank.

Also agree with those pointing out F3 and F35 are quite different. By all accounts F35 is far better image quality! Does it make it a "better" camera however? I'm doubtful, I think if I could only have one camera I'd go with the F3 over the F35 (quite unsure about this however... As haven't had the privilege of shooting with an F35!). Ideally I won't need to choose, and I can own both!! (Though I think I'll have a long wait ahead of me before an F35 reaches F3 pricing)

I can recommend the F3. Its cheap and very capable. Its not as good as the F35 in IQ but its smaller, cheaper and better in lowlight. So if you do any docu or can't afford much light, it could be better in some situations than the F35. BUT: F35 just looks better and the way the highlight go out is WAY ahead of the F3.

Anyway, here is a music video I just shot (in like 8 hours) with the F3 in prores HQ:
