Looking to buy a crane/jib to attach to a manfrotto tripod?

Are there arms that you can just attach to your existing tripod?

I'd like to see if I can get some kind of crane setup for my 60d....something that can fold up and be around or under $500.

Any suggestions?

i have the original 8' model and its worked great for me for about 3 years.
(im halfway considering selling it)

the problem with slapping a jib on a tripod is its got to be a pretty HEFTY tripod. if you try to slap ANY jib on a $500 manfrotto tripod. you'll run a VERY good chance of collapsing the legs and ruining the head.

i have an older manfrotto 510 head on 3193 legs that hold my kessler without blinking. but even used. thats about an $800 tripod/head combo.

Probably better it you mount the jib directly to the tripod and move the fluid head to the mount plate at the camera end of the jib.
I use a Manfrotto cine tripod as a base of a 12 foot jib and put an Arri 35mm camera on it with a lot of counterweight. Very sturdy tripod.

They don't make a lightweight tripod based jib arm geared towards people with DSLRs or other small cameras?

Yeah, I just want something small that you can easily travel with. Hopefully something that wouldn't be a huge pain in the ass to ship to Thailand either.

kessler makes a 5' model.
but nothing you could carry easily like a tripod...

there is stuff like the cobracrane stuff.

but ive not heard many good reviews on their stuff.

there is no reason why you couldnt put a dslr on a normal size jib.

im not sure that exists.

im heading to the metal shop tomorrow. you might be onto something...

I use the 8' kessler, and I recently added the short-tip. I use it on a 503 head and sturdy sticks, works well - but it's not the most portable thing in town.

I don't know about sticking your head on the end of the crane - that's going to take a LOT of counterweights (the 503 head easily outweighs my DSLR including rails, matte box and FF)

Someone out there must make a simple, lightweight jib. Might not have the reach of an 8', but the longer the crane, the more counterweights and sturdier build.

(Though I once forgot my damn weights - emptied my camera bag, stuck a plastic shopping bag full of rocks in it. Better than nothing!)
