Looking For Lenses

About to make the commitment to the F3 and have decided that for me best to rent (from Timur, of course, and Abel if Tim's aren't available) high end glass when needed. But for everyday use, will go with MTF Nikon adapter and Nikon glass as well as a couple of economical PL mount zooms. Looking to buy preferably DigiOptical 18-50 and 50-150 with decent mechanics. Just missed a decent buy on Red 18-50 on Reduser. Any leads appreciated.

Thanks

The DigiOptical 18-50 does come up quite frequently. Even after the launch of the F3, all the DigiOpticals got bought up fast. Then a few appeared for a period of time and even some in the Red Store. Be patient, they will come up.

Don't under estimate the need for additional monitoring to nail your focus on the F3. Lots of ink on forums you frequent have been spilled on this topic but you may know this already.

Congrats on your decision.

thanks ned!!!

Consider those new rehoused ZF's. They PL mount the ZF's but at half the cost of a CP.

Right. As I said, I just missed a very attractively priced Red 18-50. Want to get a good look at the release version of the PIX 240 which will have a different screen from the early version displayed at NAB. Currently have Ikan on-camera monitor-- not great but decent enough for framing and focus as well as Flanders Scientific 17", which isn't exactly for camera mounting. Since I write about all of these products, I get to test pretty much everything. I'll give the Zacuto EVF a whirl. Not all that impressed with the Cineroid. Also own a NanoFlash. Got to hurry up and find gear before the CFO (=wife) withdraws purchase authorization.

Did you try a wanted to buy posting on Reduser?

Last time I did that looking for an 18-50, I had an email in 15 minutes that ended in a purchase. $2650 if I recall.

Has the 50 to 150 ever come up as well...

Another crazy thought... someone asked me about the new Genesis (from AJA)... could you use the monitor off that to pull focus... I figured it wasn't possible... but it always made me wonder... trying to save a buck here and there... are really any savings throw back into lens....

What's an AJA Genesis? Google is coming up with nothing.

Maybe he's referring to the convergent design 4.4.4 10bit recorder the Gemini for $6k. The LCD screen is only 800x480, but its 24 bit.

That resolution isn't the best for pulling focus, but you could always use peaking on the built in screen to focus. I'm surprised at how good the peaking function is on this camera, but I still prefer a 720p (or better) screen.

Thanks Duke... funny thing is I wrote Gemini... then went back and changed it... maybe too much pressure from having relatives drop in...

I got my red zooms 18-50 & 50-150 from reduser too. Just told that I was looking for them used and in couple of days I got the deal. It was 2500$ for the 18-50mm and 5500$ for the 50-150mm. I think that these lenses are great for entering the PL-glass world.

Are you talking about the Babyprimes?

The ones in which Zeiss said "Carl Zeiss is in no way involved in the babyPrimes project or product of and does not maintain a relationship to the manufacturer."

According to the babyprimes press release those lenses are not being manufactured with a PL mount, nor is there a PL mount option for those lenses.

duclos modding. declicks iris, gears it, and i think you can tell him to convert it to PL mount, but might be easier/cheaper to keep it nikon and get an adapter.
