GH5 Looking for high speed SD Card reader for GH5s

Quick Q - I'm looking for a high speed reader for USB C (Thunderbolt 3) - my 128GB cards from the GH5S are taking approx an hour each to download from full. Can anyone recommend a faster option, please? I'm using Catalyst Browse to do the checksum transfer. I don't suspect that's a speed throttling factor here - but it's possible someone knows otherwise.

Cheers,

Ben.

Been using SanDisk’s “Extreme PRO USB 3.1 Type-C SD Memory Card Reader/Writer”, as well as Lexar’s “Professional USB 3.0 Dual-Slot Reader (UDMA 7)” fitted with a 3rd Party “Type-C to Micro B 3.0 Cable”. With either reader I get download times similar to Ron’s, though I mostly use ‘Hedge for Mac’ to checksum the transfers.

Many of the DITs/Digital Loaders we often hire use ShotPut for the checksum, & all seem to to have similar transfer times.

I like the size of the SanDisk, but often need the Dual-Slot functionality of Lexar so I can also download CF cards from the SoundPerson. The SanDisk has been discontinued, & replaced by a newer model.

Thanks chaps. I checked the reader I’m using and the spec says it’s only UHS I, rather than II.

Dual reader sounds like a good idea.

Ben,

Neglected to mention I’m using SanDisk’s UHS-I SDXC Cards to record UHD LongGOP.

Reason being we typically shoot dual cameras, both recording to dual-slots, & often need long record times. And while we usually download in the field, typically we archive the cards until the data has been verified back in the Edit Bays. As such we burn through a stack of cards, especially on multiple day shoots out-of-country, & if we filmed All-I the cost of media with this workflow would be a bit excessive.

Also never seen a clear visual advantage to All-I on the Panasonics, & our footage still gets transcoded to ProRes for Editorial.

Thanks Bern. We’re shooting a Netflix+ 4K workflow and matching with Sony XAVC, so need to shoot full fat 10 bit.

Must say, the results from the GH5S for lightweight foreign shoots are looking outstanding. Bit more fiddly form factor, but the pics are very much on par with the FS7. Possibly even better, dare I say it...

I concur. Still have love for my FS7, but use the GH5(s) more often. Recently saw some of our GH (3/4/5) footage finished to DCI/P3 projected on a relatively big screen, & it looked very good.

What percent of the film does Netflix approve for the GH5S? Have they evaluated the camera? Don’t see it on their page, but that’s sometimes a moving target.
