Looking for high-speed camera to hire in Melbourne Australia to compliment F3 shoot

Shooting a TVC next week on the TVC, mainly on the F3 but I want to shoot some super slomo scenes of an Olympic swimmer in action in a pool. What sort of 1000+fps camera would be good to use? Phantom? If anyone knows of a suitable solution in Melbourne Australia it would be great. My Googles aren't turning up anything useful....

Maybe a Red MX 2k 120fps+ Twixtor would work for your needs? If you can get a phantom by all means do it, but not knowing your budget, it becomes difficult to help. You could even go film for this particular scene. Maybe you can try some 120fps Red MX footage with twixtor and see if it suits you needs. There can be artifacts and sometimes doesn't work, but it normally does a good job...

here's some twixtor hi-speed racing clips from 50p source (7D, 1D MKIV)

Yeahhh.......never had much luck with Twixtor. I see too much warping and image displacement. Red is definitely Plan B but 120fps is not quite super slomo. Budget for the effects shots is not a problem. I must say though that the Moto stuff does look very nice.

Phantom flex then if you can ,amazing slow mo

second the phantom, Flex will give you more sensitivity. Can be a bit hard to rent so I'd book it early.

If resolution isn't too much of a concern but getting the image properly exposed and still getting the high speed, I'd recommend the more scientific cams from phantom. I'd talk to your local phantom rep, I believe there was on model that was 720p only, and was clean at 2000 iso. if it's difficult to light what you are shooting and u really want that exposure, the extra sensitivity will be a life savor. and should match decently with your f3.

It looks like we will have many pratical 50Hz lights around the indoor hotel pool and pool walls, and I'm reading that we could get severely flicker shooting at high speed. Tricky; it may mean F3 50P/60P and Twixtor after all.

yep, it can get flickery under HMI's too even if you had them, only ones that don't flicker are dedo's. u'd need a heavy tungsten package to get 1000 fps. maybe you can rent a epic m or red mx and get 120 fps + and twixtor that. the more frames you have the better the results.

If the lights are AC power and 50hz, then you will likely get flicker above 100fps.

If DC power then no flicker at all. I once shiut down power to an electrical panel and then fed DC power to individual circuits from a DC generator. Flickerfree practicals at high speed.

Yes that would be a reasonable solution. All I do is interpret the 60P clips as 25P in Premiere and instant slow motion. It works well without Twixtor.

Obviously, if you have the budget for it, use the dual link to externally record 1080 60p - the higher bit rate may help when sending it to twixtor

If you have to use the 720p internal, make sure to use a slow/quick setting instead of straight 720 60p. Straight 720 60p technically will work, but it'll record at a lower bit rate per frame. The slow and quick works at the 35Mbps VBR for every 24 frames instead of 60. (assuming a base 720 24p setting), meaning it'll use card space faster, but give you slightly more data to to process in post.

James... or someone else out there...

Is it possible to record 720p/24p variable frame rates... say ie @ 48 or 60 frames, off the uncompressed 422 10bits HD-SDI single output, into the KiPro Mini, in Prores 422HQ?

Or is this available only when HD-SDI Dual-Link outputs are active... in which the KPM will be useless?

Thks!

can't do overcrank on the offboard recorders, ie, 60p at a 24p timebase. but you can do 720p/60p, like a 7d would, and slow it down in post but making it a 24p timebase. ki mini records 720/60p just fine.

As Tom Wong indicates, you can't overcrank an external output. But, the HD-SDI can feed out uncompressed 720 60p... single link. Pro Res, or any other popular off board high bit rate codec will far surpass the quality and bit rate of the internal over crank.

You just conform the result to 25p or whatever you need.

Thanks, Tom...

The KPM User Manual lists under Appendix A, Specs, Formats...

720p 23.98 (from within 59.94 via VFR)
720p 25 (from within 50 via VFR)
720p 29.97 (from within 59.94 via VFR)

That means that if the F3 can output VFRs @720p24 off the HDSDI the KPM must be able to record in Prores 422 HQ... Please correct me if I'm wrong...

That sounds more like - set the camera to output 720 60p (59.94) and the Ki Pro Mini will take that 60p, and use internal VFR to record all 60 frames, and conform them to 23.98 or 29.97, resulting in an overcrank.

Essentially, the Ki Pro Mini is offering to remove the post step of conforming the footage.

But. I would consider just having the Ki Pro Mini record straight 720 60p, sending that to Twixtor, and only after Twixtor bother conforming it to 25p. Conforming doesn't change your frames... it just changes how quickly they're played. So you should be able to do that last.

Thank you so much...

Just checking out best external recorders options before taking any buying decision.

Will the PIX 240 give us better options for overcrank?

Just for the records, I'm in the NTSC world too.
