Looking for an RC Heli for my HPX

I have no idea where to get one of these or what the price range is, but I've been seeing some amazing videos from people who send their HPX's or similar up in an RC Helicopter.

anyone know any details on who makes them?

How good is your insurance policy?

I have seen cams up in model aircraft, and even transmit live back to a base station. I've never seen anything the size of a HPX go up.....must be a pretty big model.

RC copters are not accessories like tripods. If you have never operated one you probably should not be asking where to buy one. This is definitely the kind of thing you rent with operators from an experienced, insured company. RC copters that are large enough to carry an HPX sized payload can be very dangerous.

That being said Bergen makes them. They can be 5-12,000 dollars for a complete system.

I seen companies online advertising there camera flying rc copters they can fly pretty much any camera but I'm sure there expensive. cheaper than crashing one though

We have a small sub $150 RC heli, and love it.

But as others have said, flying them is another matter.

Flying with a HPX is a huge challenge.

You would need a gyroscope or stabilizer as well, which are even more money.

Anyone ever used an RC blimp or weather balloon? I'd like to find an easy aerial solution for my little GoPro HD.

youre never going to get any kind of control or stability from that. it might be ok for funsies, but i cant imagine ever using that for billable work...

youre going to need a pretty beefy chopper to get any kind of usable footage from that. there is a guy here somewhere that does it with reasonable success... but really as much as it will cost to set up to get good smooth usable footage. id just hire it out.

That same company, flying sensors, has a blimp they use with a P/T head for video work. Probably used mostly for sports, but it would also be great inside a stadium for concerts, etc.

Some of these blimps are pretty large. Apparently they use a 23-foot blimp inside the Milwaukee Bucks arena.

The GoPro cam is so light (3 ounces) I was thinking that a smaller (ie. 7 foot) blimp might be usable. Although I'm sure stability would be an issue.

at $10k it would pay for itself in about 5-7 client jobs... but you have to consider paying someone to fly it. that **** aint nowhere close to easy : |

If you want to go the inexpensive route, A company called Askman makes a camera mount landing gear for the Align TRex 450. The mount costs $120 and the RC heli about $500. The 450, I'm told, will easily carry a GoPro HD.

If you have never flown an RC heli, there are several software simulators available that will teach you the basics. I downloaded a demo this afternoon (http://www.rcflightsim.com/) and played around with it (violently crashing every time, of course!). If nothing else, it impressed upon me how much skill is involved in flying these things. I'd rather risk my GoPro than my EX1. :)

Here in the UK, anything large enough to fly a decent sized camera is large enough for the Civil Aviation Authority to consider a proper aircraft, and the rules become much more serious.Something big enough to lift a camera of that kind of weight can do a lot of damage if it comes down!

Before you do anything, try one of the r/c helicopters they sell as grown up toys.

I got one, thinking like you - The first trip was about 3 seconds, before it smashed itself to pieces on the ground. After getting new parts, the second trip up, from a large piece of soft grass with nothing at all around apart from a single tree 100 ft away lasted a bit longer until the damn thing smashed to pieces against that single tree!

I've since tried real helicopters and they are all the spawn of the devil. No way will I put any of my cameras anywhere near a model unless it was flown by a real expert.
