Looking for a font

I'm trying to duplicate the Closed Captioning effect for a video I'm working on for a deaf group. I don't want that actual Closed Captioning, because I don't want to pay thousands of dollars, nor will we really ever use it. I'm wondering if there is a font, though, that has the white letters, with the black background on each letter. That way I can type a letter and get the black background at the same time. I hope this makes sense.

Long story short: I need a font with white non serif letters and black squares/rectangles around each letter.

Kinda like:

...but not backwards

Looks like something to make in Photoshop. Probably start with Arial or Helvetica, or something similar.

Might be a little tedious, but you could always layer your matte generator under the text and crop it as needed. But does it really need to look like CC? Why not just use subtitles?

Naw, make it as a card with a keyable background (if it's a still or series of stills) and comp it in your NLE.

In Photoshop (or whatever image editing software you prefer) make the subtitles using drawing and text tools over a keyable background color. Then import the resulting files as bitmaps into your NLE ad key them over you footage as required.

'Card' is a term for a title or title screen. Probably from days of yore when they literally placed a printed title card in front of the camera and shot it.

But if they're keyed, I'll lose the black background won't I? I'm not talented in PS. I guess just making a font would work, but I don't know how to do that, either.

No, imagine a 720x480 (or whatever your resolution is) still image, of which all is, say, green, except for a band of black at the bottom, with white characters on it.

When you layer that in your NLE and set green as your key-out color, the green will vanish and you will be left with the black band with white text, keyed over your footage.

I see, I see. But I also need it to "type" on.

Okay, then instead of making one still image, use an animating tool like Director to make a frame sequence and comp it in the same way. Or I guess that you could make the sequence in photoshop and assemble it in your NLE, but that would be a bit more labor-intensive...

*edit* come to think of it I'm pretty sure that the titling tools in premiere pro (for example) would let you do this all in one stop. You probably actually don't need anything beyond your NLE, if it's a decent one...

I'm not sufficiently familiar with FCP to know exactly how to do it there. But I'm pretty sure it has titling tools, right?

Yeah, it does. I'm not a fan. It has the typewriter option with a given font, which is why I was trying to find a font that would work. Hmmm ... I might need to google "how to make a font" now.
