I am new to the forum as well as the DVX100B which i plan to buy over the next couple of days. I was wondering what accesories one should either buy right away such as tripod, bag, filter, battery, media etc. I am just starting out with this cam and i am looking for decent sturdy quality accesories. I don't need the best of course but i will be taking my camera in the back country sledding, and hiking etc. I am looking for opinions. I know the search feature probably works great but i am in between flights and want to buy before the boxing week runs out. Thanks for the help and i look forward to picking your brains over the next while. Happy Boxing Day !

UV filter is extremely important. Buy it, put it on, forget about it. You'll be happy the day a rock or something flys up and scratches or breaks it. A $40-70 filter is a great investment.

As for tripod, since you plan on hiking, I would recommend the Bogen / Manfrotto 3001BWN with the 503 head. I can say this because I have packed in with mine. You're going to get a lot of information here and it's going to be up to you in the end to weigh it all out and get what's right for you.

Best DVX accessory?

Why DVXuser of course! (and the great part is, it's free!)

- Mikko ...Doesn't even own a DVX (there, I said it )

I see some say to skip the UV and just get a ND .6 color grad. I will be doing a lot of outdoor on the snow in the mountains shooting in the next little while. Are there some NDs better than others for this type of application.

Well, you wouldn't want to have that ND filter on if you are shooting indoors. The UV filter is simply for protecting your camera lens from "accidents". You would leave it on all the time except maybe when using other filters.

Who said skip the UV?

I also second teh UV filter. ND is additioonal if you need one, but lens should ALWAYS have some filter on it for protection.

You may want a monopod for mobility, but it does not completely solve stability problem. Bogen pods are pretty heavy, a lighter one that I use is a Velbon Videomate, but its not as smooth at panning (it does decently though, and is cheap). The Velbon is the one I take to the sandy beach, or if I have to carry it a long way.

Extra batteries are a must, but the DVXuser ones from Jarred, and be advised that it seems to take 3-4 weeks to get them. You can get them faster from RUsh at EVS.

At least one mic, maybe a few. In order, I would get a shotgun, a wired lav, a wireless kit. Built-in mic is only for emergencies. For outdoors, you will want wind control (windsock or blimp).

Headphones. I like my Etymotics, they sound awesome and are tiny enough to pack anywhere.

Other stuff depends on what you are doing specifically.

Good Luck. Have fun.
