Looking for a AXSM card reader

I am looking for a card reader that can read cards from the original AXS R5 recorder. I have only found one on ebay for $900 and that seems quite high. Does anyone have or know of one that wouldn't break the bank?

I know we are in Australia, but if you can't find one, it might be worth checking out one of our major equipment supply houses called Lemac. They had a run out sale on Sony AXS-CR1 AXS Compact Card Readers. They read the R5's AXSM cards. Listed at AU$595.00, that's about US$400.00. Whether they have any stock left, I don't know. But worth checking, I think.

I got my AXS-CR1 reader several years ago brand new from Adorama for less than $300 as I recall. It came with an adapter for the newer cards as well, so I assume it's still a current product for the R7 and Venice II? You just have to keep an eye on ebay because stuff like this comes and goes. I've paid between $300 and $575 for AXSM memory cards, the R5 recorder about $500. I remember buying the AXS-CR1 reader first and AXSM memory cards before the R5 recorder itself because the latter seemed always plentiful but the reader and memory not so much.

I think if I was going to sell the F55 I would I would bundle it with the reader and cards. The thing is, the F55 is still a viable tool for my productions, it's not going anywhere. I need several cameras at once afterall.
 
The bigger question in terms of cost savings is.. Can AXSM media be off loaded using the USB port in the F5 like how you can move media from an SxS Card?

My recollection is that I can see the SxS card show up over USB but the AXSM doesn't appear. I think you're going to need the AXS-CR1 unfortunately. The AXS-CR1 does a few other things, needed for firmware updates, can also format AXSM cards, some diagnostics, but you can format them at least in the camera. I have heard people that say that well shot SxS SLog2/3 difference is not noticeable, my feeling is the AXSM is improved, take it for what its worth, certainly more flexible in post.

The Sony 16-bit RAW files are a pleasure to grade and definitely a step above S-LOG. But whether that difference matters or not really depends on what someone is shooting and what they do with the footage in post.

Doug, just asking your opinion... How would you compare RedCode Raw files to Sony's raw files? Not just in terms of size but also image quality.. which do you think is better?
 
Mike, that's a good question but I have zero experience with RED, so I am not in a position to offer any opinions about which is better. My guess is that they are pretty much the same, but that is just a guess.
