F5: Looking at new camera purchase and debating between FS7 and F5. Advice?

with the AXS-R7 coming out, you can snag a deal on a used R5, or if you need full sensor size 4K in 120fps you can get the R7.

Was gonna ask you if the F5 will do 120fps 4k with the R7 but decided not to be lazy and checked myself! Apparently it'll only be 120fps 4k with the F55?

The disappointing thing about the R7 is that it doesn't increase the HFR rate for 2K. It's still going to be 240 fps, which ain't bad, but I'd love to have 2K at 480 fps. In fact, I'd be a lot more likely to use 2K at 480 than 4K at 120.

Oops, once again the thread has gone off the rails.

The new 'affordable' eng lens give the C300ii another boost in consideration in this price class IMO.

Im sure it will work very well with that camera.

Well now that we know the full extent of the Sony NAB announcements and I know a little more about my budget I have narrowed my search just a bit. I was pretty set on the FS7 as it seems to suit my current needs the best and get an A7S2(which I rented last week) for gimbal and small work.

Well now that the FS5 will have RAW output with only a $600 upgrade fee next month and without an extension unit I am really wondering about that. Do we know if it will be 12-bit RAW on either the Odyssey or Atomos?

I am really leaning toward the FS5 with RAW option as I love the ND and form factor but hated the internal recording. This seems to solve my problems especially as I was leaning toward getting a external monitor/recording regardless. I could then skip the A7S and just get a 6300 for photo and interview B-cam needs and save myself about 5K to put toward other goodies or save.

Keep in mind that the FS5 RAW sounds a lot like FS7 RAW, which is plagued with issues. Tread carefully until it is released and tested.

Exactly, and if they haven't mentioned 14 or 16 bit in spec list you can be 99% sure it's 12bit.

If it would be 16 bit you would get similar raw that is coming from F55 and R7... I just cannot see that

i mean its the same as the fs700, no? so itll be transported over sdi in 12b log and recorded as 16b lin by r5/r7 or 12b dng by 7q or 10b prores.

i am really torn about this....i don't want to deal with raw files and love the FS7's internal Cine-I 10bit codec....
now with the FS5 FW announcement i am not sure what is an actual better file: 10bit prores (from FS5 via external recorder) or the FS7 internal 10bit....
love the smaller size of the FS5, the vari ND is great and the auto vari ND sounds incredible....the grip right on the body is perfect for me....
FS7 might actually a more compact package when shooing everything internal, the movable AF points should make AF use even better, still hate that i can't get the great grip into a position i actually like.....

Just wondering, how do you record 4K for an hour or two with FS7? the XQD card 128G, can it handle hour long recording with XAVC or MPEG2?
Is there a table showing cost of recording FS7 vs FS5 for an hour continously at 4K and at HD/1080p
Sometimes, I have a gig that do 8 to 12 hours continuous recording - so I like to know.

Paul, as an owner of the FS7 and FS5, I would not think twice about purchasing the FS7. In paper the choice is difficult to make indeed, as the FS5 has some serious features over the FS7. Many are torn over them and it is comprehensible. But the picture quality of the latter is simply far superior. The FS5 is not a smaller FS7. As many have said, it is a totally different camera, a much more limited one in almost every aspect (except those features that stand out and are nice, but not enough). Its processing power is very limited and it is very noisy - not sure the raw will fix this, because that is not due to the XAVC-L codec. I obviously have not seen raw from the FS5. That might change things a bit, but we will have to wait and see.

Cine EI, Lut support and XAVC-I are the reasons I will take an FS7 over an Fs5 anyday of the week. For me they are key in breaking out of the old sony colour science.

XQD card is expensive for an hour or two - what would you do if you were to video a 6 to 8 hours weddings?

This thread is F5 vs FS7 is it not? No FS5 needed here?

Announced skinny raw for F5 seems like a big step for making that camera more clearly different.

i used to own a FS7 and need to get another camera now, my mind is made up, i will go with the FS7 again, the internal codec, CINE-I,...i still don't see a camera in the market that comes close in price, quality, handling and ease of post....
i never really understood why people get the FS7 to shoot raw, it makes more sense with the FS5 and the coming firmware IMO but we will see how that plays out....and since i am not really interested in shooting raw anyway, the question for me is how much better is the external prores of the future FS5 compared to the internal 10bit cine-I today....looking at the footage i shot with my FS7, i am not really worried....
the other issue for me is that someone in this forum seems to have figured out a way for customize the handle to mount it directly on the FS7 body....combined with the AF firmware upgrade and the joystick this should be quite an improvement for the way i work....
i am pretty much buying my old kit again....
