Considering the oly and tokina as the fast/wide solutions. Just wondering what you guys think of them.

Seen some sparkling footy from both.......however the oly scares me for the "focus by wire" aspect as i want to be able to use follow focus and it seems that it wouldn't be really precise.....otherwise the lens sounds great.

On the tokina side of things i've heard there may be vignetting at the widest point? (11mm) is this true?....if so how far do you have to zoom to clear that.

Would love to hear of other wide zoom suggestions as well (minimum 2.8). Am thinking of using the sigma 17-50, 2.8........but that only gives me 34mm at 2x crop......really wanna be around 28ish minimum.

Thanks

I have the Tokina and there is no vignetting. If you do see it its because you have too many filters on it.

I love the Tokina, have not used the oly. The first 2 shots here are tokina.

Most of this video is as well.

I think that just sold me, ha, ha..........can i ask what you do for nd filters?........if you use them at all. And what other lenses do you use to compliment the tokina......thanks a lot.

Any nd filter will do, I prefer B+W as they dont have a color cast. ( I use them all the time )

"And what other lenses do you use to compliment the tokina"

Nikon works very well, but almost any modern lens will do the trick. I had a hard time getting canon FDs to match.

Yeah, the FDs are lower contrast and color the rendition is deferent then the tokina. Its very hard to get them to look the same in post.

brave soul you are......i was thinking more the sigma (nikon mount) 17-50, 2.8........good match you think?

Don't mean to barrage you but just one last question about the tokina. Just have heard talk about the barrel distortion or perspective distortion.......i'm a lil cloudy as to the difference between the two........but i am assuming it's noticeable at 11mm, at what point do you zoom and it goes away........not really usable for me if you get that fish eye effect........if i have to go to 16mm the it would be pointless......what are your experiences with that?

Yeah, the FDs are lower contrast and color the rendition is deferent then the tokina. Its very hard to get them to look the same in post.

Let me totally hijack this thread(although it may be relevant). What fast zoom matches the FDs well?

Its a wide lens so there is going to be some distortion. It never gets fisheye. Here is a quick video of my kid @ 11mm

Barrel distortion is when you see the image start to "keystone" around the corrners.

perspective distortion is the distortion when you point your camera up or down on a very wide lens. It looks strange to us because we are not used to seeing the world at 11mm. This is why you have tilt and shift lens to correct for it.

HMMMMM, yeah i guess unless i can afford the oly 14-35 (2500 bucks!) then the tokina and sigma are the way to go.........the oly 12-60 looked promising but sadly its not a constant aperature, so kinda pointless as a zoom.

Thanks for all the input.......its that damn 2x crop!....lol......t2i/7d/60d suit the sigma/tamron perfect (28-85mm equiv).....but on the g series its (34-100).......just for weddings alone its too short

I have the Olympus 14-54 - I don't think it would work well with a FF. The focus throw is minuscule. Otherwise the lens is great - fast and tack sharp.

Its not a constant aperture correct?.....anyways, was really interested in it, but i am scared of the focus issue.........has to be able to work on a rig with a ff, or have some reasonable solution for it.
