i have searched around on the forum but dident really find any clear answer on my quaestion... im shooting with the hvx, but i dont have a good computer right now so im just draging the contents folders on the p2 directly in to an external harddrive and then burning out dvd backups... is it any problems with transfering mxf files from a normal harrdrive?? any errors? i tryed to trasnfer a couple of clips with the dvfilm demo, my computer is really bad so the clips was not that smood, but other than that it seemed ok...

The quality of your computer really is not going to impact the transfer of P2 files to an external hard drive. it might be a little slow but that's about it. Your computer is acting solely as a pass-through mechanism. I typically use a Firestore but when I do use my P2 cards I do the same workflow you mentioned. Drag the contents and last clip files to an external hard drive and than either back up to DVD or to a second external hard drive. That way I always have two copies of the files. I then use P2Log to verify that the files transfered safely.

Just wondering - what do you do when the contents of an 8 gig card exceed the
4.7 limit of a DVD? Any way to split between two dvds?

Yes, that's actually very easy. The P2 media uses the FAT32 file system, so the size of any one file cannot exceed 4GB. Another option would be to use dual-layer DVDs, but I trust single-layer DVDs much more at this point -- I've had mixed results with DVD+DL disks, I have a extensive collection of coasters.

I have only done P2 import through FCP so far, pretty mindless. It looks easy enough to drag the contents and lastclip folders to import- but when opening the contents I see
separate audio, video, etc- which files do I move to make sure the entire clip is imported?

EVERYTHING!

Read the forums, those people who try to take shortcuts by just grabbing the video invariably run into a brick wall when they realize their NLE requires all of the files for a successful import.

Jim,

Do you verify for your own peace of mind or are problems with transferred files fairly common, in which case it would be imperative to check all files.

The CONTENTS folder and LASTCLIP.TXT make up the MXF footage. It's in a batch, all your takes from that recording session together in this one batch of data.

Busterama,
I verify for my own peace of mind. I have never had an issue or problem with a transfer. That goes for transfering from P2 cards or Firestore or P2 store. I just prefer to take a couple extra minutes to make sure everything is where it should be. It's just like checking tape in a camera viewfinder back when I shot tape.

Hey Ben, that's what I was asking - since the last clip and contents folders
make up the whole card, how can it be put on two DVD's, since one won't hold it?

Also - I just posted a question in the FCP section you could probably answer.
Your help is much appreciated!

There in is the delmia. I import everything with FCP and only keep the QT files. With the FS, I mostly shoot QT format, unless I really need clip spanning, then P2. As for backing up on DVD, Toast 8 is out now with a back up function that will span DVDs.

Shooting on a 4GB card, no problem, all fits on one DVD. Anything bigger, you need to so some thinging about it.
