Log & Transfer problem with HMC-150 / AVCHD

Looking for anyone that might can help with a Log & Transfer problem.

I am unable to Log & Transfer from my camera.

Instead, I get this message:

* contains unsupported media or has an invalid directory structure.
Please choose a folder whose directory structure matches supported media.
* can be the name of the camera, the folder FCP is looking at, or whever you point L&T to to retrieve the files..

Having researched this for hours it appears to be a well known problem but I have yet to find a fix. (Note: The most common work around seems to be Toast or something like it.)

From the research:
- it appears this problem is camera independent. It happens with lots of different ones. (I am using an HMC-150.)
- it appear that this problem is system independent. Assuming you have an intel mac, it doesn't matter whether it is an iMac or Mac Pro, it happens on both. (I am using an iMac 2.8 with 4 gig.)
- it has nothing to do with the obvious first conclusion from the error message. Despite this message, no file or directory structure has been corrupted.
- L & T is unable to load the thumbnail pictures regardless of if the video clips are on the camera's SD card (class 6, 16Gig) or if they have been transfered (via the manual method) and are on the computer's hard drive.

It is a random problem. I have formatted the card, shot a couple of clips, all is fine... shoot a few more clips and BAM... problem arises.

Any thoughts are appreciated.

Brian,

Thanks for the reply.

What file name are you referring to? In the camera? In the editing software?

There is no place (that I'm aware of) to enter a file name.

usually indicates an issue with the card. it gave me this same message because in the log and transfer process it should take you right to your card's location. i popped the card back in my camera and it gave me an error and then after it fixed it it said there was no data. you have to manually remove the mts files off the card, use mtsmerger to merge the broken content and use something like toast 10 to convert it to your desired codec.

...damn panasonic for not providing some sort of other log and transfer application of their own

Have you tried copying the file contents from the SDHC card to your hard disk first, then logging and transferring?

Here's my workflow that works perfectly:
1. Record to SDHC (obviously)
2. Turn off HMC150 and remove card
3. Pop SDHC card into card reader connected to computer
4. Create a new folder on my video hard disk to store the raw footage (e.g. "200907 - July 4th Fireworks")
5. Copy entire contents of card into the newly created folder on my video hard disk
6. Open FCP
7. Log and Transfer
8. Backup raw footage to separate HD
9. Replace card in camera and format for next recording

Make sure you are running FCP 6.05 or greater I got the same msg until I updated. Make sure to keep the file structure Private/AVCHD/....

Hey Guitarzan, are you using a card reader for the capture?

I just got this problem myself. The two variables for me seem to be using a card reader for the capture or the 0.6 upgrade.

But if this isn't program specific perhaps its the card reader?

I had this same problem today. When I played back the card in my camera, some clip icons had a exclamation point with a blue background instead of the picture. I pressed the clip and it said there was an error (I forget the exact words). It then said "fixing error." I did this for all of the clips and then put it back in my computer and FCP was able to read the card.

you have to manually remove the mts files off the card, use mtsmerger to merge the broken content and use something like toast 10 to convert it to your desired codec.

Can anyone elaborate on the mtsmerger? Is it a plug-in or a program? If so where is it available and where can I get some more information? I am trying to recover some files off of a "damaged" card.

Thanks!
