"locking" firewire port on HPX170?

I've looked through the archives on exactly what the 'locking' firewire port on the HPX170 means, but I'm still scratching my head. I assume you need a special cable to lock it into the 170? Is there anything different about the 1394 port on the 170 than on any other 6-pin 1394 port on another camera?

Yes, you'd need a locking cable. The difference between the hpx170's port and other ports is that there are flanges on the port that are designed to catch the locking clips on locking cables. You can use a locking cable on a non-locking port, but it won't lock -- because there's nothing to lock onto. So it'd just slip off, like it would on any regular firewire port. On the HPX170, there's a raised flange on the port, so the locking cable can grab onto it and won't come off unless you specifically release the lock on the cable.

If you are just using the cam to transferring data at your computer, this is a non-issue as long as you aren't moving things around. If it was for field use, like live streaming, you would want the latching cable for sure.

Be great if there was a retro fit conversion for that connector on the HVX!
