Hi everyone,
I'm buying my RED with the intent of renting it to local indie filmmakers and students as an alternative to s16. However I'm only getting one camera. If I have a client that needs more than one RED for a project, I'd like to know a few other RED owner/op in my area and make them some money.

I know most people are centered out of Cali and NY. I'm in Maryland. Out of curiosity, where is everyone else?

Aren't any of the hoards of people that are going to rent out their camera concerned about all of the business hassles and issues that go along with the rentals? Like needing to also provide accessories, or buying special kinds of insurance that cover rental activity, or the possible damage to the equipment and what to do if a disagreement arises with customers and that sort of thing?

Just how lucrative is the rental business for a single-camera owner anyway? Should I be looking into renting out my Red when I get it? Starting a business wouldn't be problem because I already have one, and finding renters wouldn't be a problem because I'm in a major city (Seattle), but it's all the other stuff that makes me wonder whether the cost justifies the effort of renting out the gear.

I will be renting my Red One to rental houses when they run out. I won't make as much as renting it out to a client, but at least I won't have to deal with all those other issues like insurance etc.

I won't be using the Red One myself until I get my Red Zoom lens....
 
I live in Northern VA, in the DC metro area. I wouldn't mind renting until I can get one myself. But as another poster said, there are lots of issues with doing this. If you only have one and something happens, who would I go to for backup? Based on what you're saying, I still have to go to another place to get lenses and other equipment needed for a shoot. I know there are at least a couple of reputable rental companies in the DC area, maybe you should work with them. Nice idea to help out the low budget folks though.
 
I am starting a rental business based on these cameras. I have 5 available in the ny,nj area although if it doesn't work out here I will either relocate a couple to Israel or have some for sale. My website will be up shortly nyredrentals.com

Generally, this is the best idea for an individual owner - well, this and going on set with it as an operator, ac or dp. It offers you the majority of the revenue with a much smaller amount of headache.
 
What's the typical % cut for the person who loans their camera to a rental house when the rental house needs that extra camera for a customer?
 
50/50? Sounds like the rental house is ripping-off the guy who's loaning it to them. I could see 70/30 being a more fair ratio.
