I thought I'd post the workflow that we here at Last Minute Productions have been using so others could comment or learn from it. First, let me say, I always believe things/procedures can be improved so in no way do I think what we do is the Gold Standard of P2 Workflow.
Presently we own three 4GB P2 cards. We use the P2 store to dump the footage and re-format the cards.
When we return from the field we hook up the P2 Store to a PowerBook G4 (a refurbished model that has a PCMCIA slot). The laptop is hooked up to an Accomdata drive (400 Fire Wire - normally 250 to 320 GBs in size). I open up Final Cut - the Accomdata drive is designated as my Capture Drive.
Once in Final Cut I create a new project - usually named for the shoot, not for the project. I select File > Import > P2. The footage is then converted and placed on the drive. Once completed I shut everything down and take the drive to my edit bay.
I fire up my G5 and the Raid -- I hook up and start the Accomdata drive. The files are then copied from the external drive to the Raid (drag and drop). Once that is complete - I disconnect the external drive.
Once I start up Final Cut on the G5, I open the project that the footage was shot for and import the folder with all the new footage.
The external drive contents are catalogued in FileMaker and stored in case I need the footage again.
We've had to re-create a major project we shot over the Summer (720/24Np) and everything worked great.
Hopefully this helps some. If you see flaws in our system please let us know - we're always looking to improve.
