too bad youre not getting more attention, i REALLY like this one. its going in to my, "Hey Timur, pay attention to how this is shot retard!" folder of my brain. I really dig the sunny backlighting over exposed asphault... i love that.
Super 16 vibe and cinematography. Camera work matches perfectly.
Just when I thought, ‘ahh, tell it to dear abby” you pulled a neat little bunny rabbit out of your hat that didn’t feel like a cheat, and had me reexamine what I’d been told.
I’m a fan of short stories that show a small but poignant little snapshot of humanity and you did this admirably. As far as “drama” goes it may be a little light for the big prize, but I appreciate your making the flick.
Ps- I was ready to dislike the waking up and preparing for work cliché, but it was absolutely essential to your script and story. Well done.
This is one of my favorites, in my top five right now. I love the voyeuristic shots mixed in with intimate close-ups; the cinematography works very well. It's natural, flowing from one shot to the other seamlessly. The handheld approach works very well too. Some of my favorite shots are the ones in the car when camera is in the backseat and the headrest slightly obscures our view of her (1:54) Awesome shot!! Another great sequence is the running to work; the glare on the street from the sunlight...awesome awesome shots!
The acting/voiceover is very professional. The sound is very clean and her voice easy to listen to. Andreea Arion gave a great performance, especially those early morning scenes in the bathroom, lots of great subtly in her beats.
The overall approach to the film works on many levels; from the music in the background to the color tone you established throughout all the shots. I think this was a well executed film that works across the board. Looking forward to more of your work.
It got me thinking LloydC. You were very successful in bringing me into her life. I was listening. And that is what it is all about as far as I'm concerned.
My plan was to test out my writing skill as I really want to start focusing on the story rather than the images, which I've been so concerned about the last couple years. I wanted to develop a character with problems like everyone has everyday (although, this is perhaps taken to a rare semi-extreme).
Wish I had more time to flesh it out more... It was quite the rush job to finish it before hte onslaught of assignments. Wrote it in one night, shot it the next two days and edited it on and off for about a week. But I guess it wouldn't have turned out the way it has if I had more time.
Geoff, have your film downloaded and will watch it tonight. Grabs look great!
I've now seen all the films. And since I'm apparently too "forum immature" (not enough posts) to vote, I'll do it here. This is definitely number 1. This film immediately stood apart amongst the drone of typical "crime" pieces. Drama is not just relegated to bullets, suicide, and love triangles, and this film proves it! Well done.
And just to give my quick "Academy" hit list of winners (as I will also do in the various other threads):
Best Picture: Wasted
Best Cinematography: TEMPO
Best Screenplay: Wasted
Runners Up to Best Picture: TEMPO, Eighteen Seconds
Notables: Ajar, Not the Same, After Class, Middle Man
I think any stories that inspire people to step out and do something more with their lives always makes great movies. Any visual progress in the protagonist's life, seen on the screen is exciting too.
I didn't like how the voice that was always panned into my left ear. It was distracting. I did feel for the young woman. I think you did a good job at conveying her struggle.
The ending saved this piece for me. I found my mind wandering as I listened to her go on and on. It felt a lot longer than it was. Part of that could have been the effect of listening to a whole movie in VO. Some of the time she came off as if she were reading it, other times it was good. The stuff about Hitler came completely out of left field and I actually laughed because it felt so out of place with where she had been going.
Ah, but then your ending came along and I loved how you handled that. I almost stopped watching twice as it seemed to drag for me. I'm glad I didn't because you had a good payoff at the end.
I loved the actress and thought this would have been nearly perfect if it were 2 min. I agree with Blaine, I think the execution is too long for the idea. I too loved the ending, but thought it would have had sooooo much more punch if the whole thing was 2 min.
I Voted for you Lloyd. It was between Wasted and 18 Sec. 18 Sec was visually awesome but I sympathized with your lead alot. The panned voice was annoying and the whole thing in V.O. should have been a no go for me but something about her and her voice I really liked. The piece was less than perfect but for me it connected and in the end that's all that counts.
Thnx for making something good. After I watched the first few I was about to delete all the clips, they were so bad! But I made a game out of it and created a rating system:
0 Stars: Total Crap
1 Star: Not Completely Sh!tty
2 Stars: Not Bad
3 Stars: Good
4 Stars: Very Good
5 Stars: The Winner
I must admit I watched to the end and enjoyed it !!!!
It is sad that in life many people think this way and this short had me watching to see what happens to her life or doesn't.
Well done.
Ian
I enjoyed this, the dialogue was natural for the most part and I loved your choice of handheld shots. Everything about it was quite naturalistic and you captured the mood very nicely. CC was spot on too.
I did not like the end however. I had already got it; as soon as she said "tommorrow will be differen't" you're thinking 'as if'. I would have chosen to end it there instead of pushing the point in the last scene. Also it would have left the audience tihnking more as there is a possiblility that she might change (tho we are 90% sure she'll wake up and do the same thing the following day).
Overall though it captures that feeling well. We've all had it and I suspect for most of us (including me) we dont act on it when we say we will.
Thanks for the feedback guys... and thanks for the vote Johnny!
I was iffy on the ending too, but I ended up liking it as it created this vicious cycle... makes it a little more tragic. But I get where you're coming from Darkline.
