Live View / LCD Problem (Camera Defect?)

My Canon 7D has started to display mostly transparent, but noticeable yellow bands across the LCD during Live View. It happens in both video mode and photo mode and the bands alter slightly when I use the autofocus. The bands do not show up on videos or photos, but nothing I've tried will get rid of them during Live View.

Has anyone else experienced this? Does this sound like it's possibly a defective camera? I have zero problem getting an exchange if that is the case.

Where does it happen? And are the bands moving or static? You might just be seeing the effects of shooting at the wrong shutter speeds under certain lights.

If it's happening in broad daylight that's a different issue.

Hmmm...you may have hit it, Kholi. I was in a room with only flourescent lights. I tried changing shutter speeds and the bands either got darker or lighter and jumped around on Live View based on the shutter speed. When I went to a room with tungsten lighting, the bands disappeared.

So this is not a defect? Today is the last day I can exchange the cam at the store instead of dealing with Canon's service department. I take it this is normal?

I appreciate the info.

Well, lol, I wonder if Barry would call it a defect!? But, it's not an LCD issue. You just have to find the right shutter speed to combat fluorescent lighting (overheads in offices = nooo~ ) OR change the light. Personally, I haven't been able to find one that gets rid of it completely. We simply do not have enough control over the shutter for these cameras yet.

So no fault of yours! The Camera's a-okay.

Alrighty. Thanks for the heads up. So far, the cam has been great. I was just shocked when I saw the bands and assumed the worst. I've seen flickering due to flourescent lights on video cams, but nothing like this. It'll make using graduated filters more interesting. ;)

Correction: The yellow banding does appear on footage. Very noticeable once viewed on something other than the 7D LCD.

Do you think an FLD filter might help correct this or is it pretty much a lost cause if shooting under flourescent lights is unavoidable?

You "really" need a shutter speed that is a multiple of the Flourescent light's frequency (60Hz in NTCS land and 50 Hz in PAL land). So you need 1/60, 1/120, etc.

And for guys in PAL land you need 1/50, 1/100 depending on the lights. Although I find I can get away with 1/30 in PAL land on my 5D. Less so the 7D and GH1 for some reason. Weird.
