Live view histogram!

I shoot tethered a lot in my studio and own Nikon camera control pro software. Several months ago I came across ControlMyNikon software which has a lot more features and it's only $10. I emailed the software developer asking if he could add some video features such as histogram and crop marks and to my amazement I checked back yesterday and he has added them and more. It's still in beta but I tried it today and very stable. He even added a separate utility called Cinematography Pro for the D7000 and D5100 that's included with the ControlMyNikon software. http://www.controlmynikon.com/

he usual disclaimers, I have no ties with this software except being a happy customer. If anyone has ideas for this guy let him know as he is obviously willing to accommodate us. I also asked for some kind of focus pull but he doesn't think that would be possible.

Thanks for sharing. That software is pretty awesome!

Yep that's right... You can basically control everything from a laptop. It's great!

I just tried it with a netbook and the software is great. I believe the view quality is at 640 pixels.

And the next experiment...wireless USB!

I'm going to try it on my MBP running windows and see if it's worth investing in the next step.

I noticed that you cannot pull focus while recording. Does anyone know if this is a Nikon limitation or a software limitation?

Would be amazing to have a manual focus that could be linked to a game controller or some such thing to enable remote focus pulls during recording.

Also, would be great to have a waveform display in the cinematographer program rather than a histogram. And perhaps transparent overlay?

Probably a software limitation. You can AF while recording by just half pressing the shutter button, so the ability is there, and should still be available when tethered, since you can do just about anything else.

I've been waiting for Magic Lantern for a very long time for Nikons, jealous of my friends with it on their Canons.

While this isn't Magic Lantern, it's amazing! Wow! Now I just need a laptop!

If they're able to do all this, maybe there's a way to stream the actual full res video straight over USB. USB2.0's average 320Mbit/s should be sufficient for something like this, no?
