7D Live View DOF question

Does Live View permit the user to evaluate depth of filed when in video mode? In other words, can you see shallow dof as you open up the aperture?

My job has a 7d and although I took it out for a test drive I could not discern this, though I was relying solely on the camera's screen to focus.

Is it easier to see dof changes with a viewfinder?

Thanks. I'm trying to decide whether it's worth it for me to invest my own $$ on a viewfinder to use with my job's 7d.(they don't use it for video).

Very cool question!

To summ it up: when in still mode, I have to press that button to close the iris to the set aperture, thus seeing the final DoF.
In Videomode the iris is always closed to the set aperture (sounds kind of logic now that I think about it) so that I can always see the resulting DoF.

Correct?

Thankx :)

One thing to remember is that you are seeing a fraction of the image on the viewfinder, so the DoF will be increased just from the fact that you aren't seeing all the detail.

Think of it in terms of photoshop, the more you are zoomed in, the blurrier the image gets, the more you zoom out, the sharper it gets. That said, it's not so extreme, I can easily tell if I am getting the DoF I want usually.
