I am trying to find out how to set up a live stream. i have never attempted this before. does anybody have any knowledge on this subject? I have a DVX100AG and a Dell Experion 1720 lap top. Can i connect via firewire? What software and gear am i going to need? I do have a means to broadcast over internet. Any advice will help.

You'd either need your own video server or a remote video server..... I believe with the remote server you plug into your computer (firewire should work) and then you point your video to the remote server and then your viewers go to the remote server.... thus putting no bandwidth load on your computer except the out going video stream.

What do you mean by "point your video"to the remote server? also i've been told that i'm going to need to be running an editing program such as final cut or vegas on the laptop. is this true? i've also been told that i'm going to need a plug in to convert the video files to a streaming file. the plug in that i've been turned on to is quicktime broadcaster. has anybody used this? am i on the right track?

The easiest way to do it is with Windows Media Encoder. It is a free download and a very flexible program.

It can handle 24p, widescreen, HD, or whatever else you can throw at it.

If you are doing a presentation and want to put a powerpoint in with the video it is as simple as setting up a second source and switching between the two like a live switcher with your mouse.

As far as streaming there are many different ways to do it.

If you just need one person watching then you can stream it directly from your computer to theirs.

If you need a lot of people watching then you will need a streaming server and they get pricey quick because of the bandwith needed to run them.

Edit:
I just read your last post....sorry.

You don't need an editing program with Windows Media Encoder. It allows you to capture video and encodes it in real time. If you already have a video that you want to stream there is an option to do that, but you don't need this program to do that. This is the program to use if you want to broadcast a LIVE video.

Quicktime does offer a program. If you are on a mac then use it because that is the only option. Windows Media Encoder is the better choice on Windows.

You also need a pretty good upload speed on your internet connection to send a decent video feed. I would say at least 700kbs. If you have dial-up then don't waist your time. You can do audio only with dial up though.

What you would have to do is log-in to the website of the video stream webhost, and you can point your video (after encoding) to the remote server (link your video to the webhost server.) so then you can have more than one person viewing it. Now if you just need to link the video upto one computer on the other side, then you can go without the video stream webhost.... and just use the WME. So either way you'd need Windows Media Encoder, then if you need more than one viewer you'd have to use a video server.... otherwise, for one viewer, WME would handle it itself, so long as you have a proper internet connection.

Hey buddy. Great software called "Wirecast" is a brilliant program. I setup a bi-directional system on two campuses in two separate towns for about $7,000.

Programs only $400.

Are you sending it to one location or do you want people to pull it off a server?
