Live shoot with DVX100a and PDX, some issues...

Ok so i shot out show last friday with 3 camera's a drum shot handycam, wide shot still with the PDX and went hand held with the DVX.

A few things i noticed.

1.) using 30p on the DVx and mostly stock setting the image was amazing just that when shooting subjects in blue light the image seemed fuzzy or not so clear and only in the blue light the rest of the shot at least the ones i watched seemed good. I will try and get a clip up.

2.) i had the PDX mounted on a cheap tripod on a tall road case to get over the crowd and to the right of the floor, shooting and off axis wide shot, somewhat in line with 1 side of the speakers. Audio wise it was decent but i noticed the kick and sub bass created alot of motion blur/ jitter, and blurry lines in the video footage? Is this due to the cheap tripod and placement of the camera? Would a fluid head or tripod "absorb" that shock so to speak?

Thanks

The road case probably absorbed a lot of frequencies that made their way up through the tripod and to the camera. A sturdier tripod mounted on something that isn't a box shape would probably isolate the camera better.

I don't know if it's because of a slight misalignment of the CCDs or a result of the varying wavelengths of red green and blue light- whatever the cause is- it can become impossible to get all 3 of the DVX's color channels equally focused in certain situations. Normally this isn't too noticeable, and it varies depending on your f-stop and zoom settings.

When you focus under “normal” lighting conditions you're naturally focusing based on the Green CCD because that's where the majority of your luminance information comes from. And when the Green channel is in focus, the Red channel is somewhat out of focus, and the Blue channel is really out of focus. Stopping the lens down to a lower f-stop, staying at a wide angle, and racking focus are the only ways around it- three things that would have been difficult or impossible in your situation.

It could also be artifacts from the 4:1:1 DV compression. Try a chroma smoothing or chroma re-sampling plugin and see if it helps.
