HV30 is out...what a joke

Disappointing to be sure.

30P is nice, but what I'm really curious about is whether the firmware includes 24p pulldown flags.

I also wonder whether this firmware might be "backward compatible" with an HV20.

I'm just saying, if they offered such bombastic changes from the HV10 to the HV20 it's normal people were expecting more from the HV30. I mean, if I hadn't bought the HV20 yet I would probably still buy it instead of the HV30.

I agree. The HV30 looks like the same basic hardware with some simple firmware upgrades (and a new zoom toggle). If Canon would just sell me the firmware I'd be happy.

More like an HV21 !

More like an HV21 !

Yeah, but it's black! It will match my LEX.

Just kidding. That is disappointing. It's more like an HV21

If it only had a manual aperture option, it would be the ultimate 35mm adapter solution.

This was the obvious play, think about it with the way things are going when they bring out next years models AVCHD will probably be so far along they might not have an HDV model at all. There doesn't seem to be much point to messing with success in probably the format's last year as a consumer technology.

It'll still be in the pro space. What I'd really like to see is a slightly beefed up hv30 in a nicer larger body, but still smaller than a canon a1 with manual features and a focus/zoom ring, like a bigger version of the sony a1u for around 1600-1800 bucks.

That's what I was wanting, also. I like the small form factor of the HV20 but miss manual controls. There really isn't a camera that fills this niche, other than the aging Sony A1U (which lacks 24p, etc.).

I agree, it's almost exactly the same. This is why I never buy consumer cameras. Each year they give you what seems like a new feature but already pre exists on their higher end cameras.

Aww... I just got the HV20 and now there's the HV30. I won't be able to shoot slight slow-motion like on the HV30 with 30p.

They should have called the HV20 the HV24 and the HV30... the HV30.

With the black body, you'll be able to get a shot a close up shot with a light shining on the camera with out reflecting as much light as you would with the HV20. Not much advantage. If I were Canon I'd include a lens hood to make it look like the GZ-HD7. He he.

The zoom toggle? Can't find much information on that. What is it?

What's VIXIA?

There are professional grade HDV cameras that give you 720p60 but no consumer models. 60p is totally feasable for consumer cameras but it is a marketing nightmare because most customers demand full high definition 1080i rather than fast action 720p. Sanyo got around this by selling the camera as a full high definition 1920 x 1080i camera and then giving it 720p60 capability as a bonus for sports shooting. Samsung introducded a natural progressive 720p60 camera but its newer camera will only support low framerate 1080i and 1080p. The Samsung 720p60 camera may still survive if it is offered as a poor mans alternative to 1080i. Toshiba also offers a 720p60 camera and they also market this as the poor mans alternative to their 1080i line of cameras.

I meant at 1080, like you said consumers don't care for 720p60 as useful as it might be to us.

The HV30 wasn't advanced much, I think, to hype up the HF10 and HF100. Both looked awesome at CES. I don't think the HV30 was on display to play with but it was in the display case. I was disappointed at how little was changed as well but if the HF10 and HF100's AVCHD performance is good enough in the reviews come April, I may look into getting one of them. I'm fine with my HV20 as it is but tapeless is hard to resist. The image quality, 24p, and size of the cameras was what sold me on the HF10 and HF100. It's just the AVCHD question being the deciding factor.

Jack, how did the image from these cams hold up againts the HV20/30?

Well, on the new LCD's they looked pretty darn good, I'd say equal at the least. There was a clip that played at 60i on the demo screens, I only got a look at the last 10 seconds or so because the demo was ending. Looked just fine and dandy.

Don't feel bad....................... neither cam can record well with any motion. :2vrolijk_08:

Been there, done that with HDV. :thumbdown

Please, let us not get started again with the hyperbole. Despite the HDV compression and the rolling shutter issue the HV20 have proven itself as a performer, as its popularity show.
