"Live" or "Live-to-Tape" with multiple 7D's..is it possible??

I have been searching high and low for a way to do this...

I am currently trying to figure out a way to shoot an event live or live-to-tape (a director in a broadcast truck receiving all video signals and creating a line-cut that is either broadcast live or recorded to tape) with multiple 7D's. Overheating and poor video-out options to send the signal to the broadcast truck seem to be my biggest hurdles.

I have figured out workarounds but nothing elegant...ice packs and Black Magic HDMI- HDSDI converters and live center-punching image to get rid of red record dot, combined with external monitors (through powered signal splitters) for shooters. The whole thing is getting messy and ugly, fast.

Does anybody know anybody that has had success shooting live or live-to-tape with 7D's or 5D's? Does anybody have any ideas for a more elegant way to do this?

Thank you in advance.

Can I just ask why you would want to do this over using eng cams?

A producer of mine had the same brainstorm... and gave up. We ended up shooting to card on all cameras, then loading them all into final cut and using the "switcher" mode to do a "live" switch on the 4 cams. Took a bit of logistics when shooting to make sure we were all close to the same start/stop times, but it worked. Obviously, this is useless if your goal is actual live-to-air.

Did the same thing with 3 EX3s. worked even better since we could record start to intermission on one take. Just 6 quicky "line up to downbeat" and we were ready to "live" switch the show.

Believe me, I don't. A producer from one of my recent 7D shoots fell in love with the images (rightly so) and asked me if a live event could be done with these cameras. So I set to work trying to figure it out. And he's right, it would look amazing if it could be done.

Yeah, I think I've (we've) hit a wall.

That's my backup plan. EX3s with letus 35mm adapters. We will just have to overlight the event.

This is the problem with 5/7Ds now, everyone wants everything filmed on them. They were never designed for live jobs like this and the workarounds are so great it feels like another thing to go wrong.
