Live capture - so many problems

I am getting frustrated with this. I just bought the HVX200 a week ago. I don't have P2 cards yet because they are too expensive for me...shooting miniDV is fine for right now. But I am experimenting with live capture as I do have 2 laptops and 1 desktop.

I have access to Adobe Premiere w/ CineForm 4.1, Avid Xpress Pro 5.6, and Grass Valley Edius Broadcast 4.

Edius works on my desktop system in 1080i and DVCPro 50. No 720 support but I've read about that. However on my laptops, it won't work at all. I can't get the video to show up on the capture screen.

Avid will only capture SD on my desktop, but no HD. It won't capture anything on the laptops.

CineForm won't do anything on any computer.

Computer specs:
Desktop: Dual Core Athlon 4200+, 2 GB Ram, GeForce 7900
Laptop: Dell 1505 Dual Core Pentium (something fast), 2 Gb Ram, ATI Radeon x1300

Trying to get version 5 of CineForm, but their system won't send me a link to download the trial.

This is beyond ridiculous. DVCProHD is a great format, but it sucks if you can't edit it.

Any thoughts, suggestions?

I've had good luck with DV Rack doing live capture and then transferring to other editng apps. It even has a "QTAVID" record mode if you can use Avid.

I saw those theads. But I can't figure out why my desktop will capture 1080i but my laptop won't...same settings on Edius and the camera.

CineForm 5 won't work either. What a dissapointment.

Guess I'll wait for CS3 bundle and OnLocation.

When buying a laptop to do HD capture you will need to be very careful about the actual CPU in the system. You absolutely do not want a mobile CPU, you need a desktop CPU. I priced out a Dell to do DVRack and had to go to their professional line for the non-mobile CPU and the price shot up to $2500 USD. Plus a CPU that hot will require a lot of air to cool it down which means a lot of fan noise.

Instead, I built a portabile Desktop using a LAN Party style case and silent computing techniques. (www.silentpcreview.com). I'm still in progress on how to make the captureing station truely mobile; I'll post pictures when I have it sorted out...

Assuming that you do have the same settings in EDIUS across your computers... are you plugging the dongle into the computer you are attempting to capture with? Gotta make sure you have that in there.

The only other thing I could think of offhand would be the speed of your laptop HDD that you are capturing to. Is it straight to the laptop HDD? Is your laptop 4500, or 5400 rpm? Either of those, or both in combination could bottleneck it. You don't generally want your footage drive to be the same that you have EDIUS (or other NLE) installed on.

but you are saying that you don't see the video even coming up on the screen... Which would lead me to believe that you don't have one of your capture settings right... You might try posting this part of your query in an existing thread in the EDIUS sub-forum here, and see what Brandon has to say about it.

I run DV Rack 2.1 HD on a lowly 1.5GHz Celeron P4M system, and it doesn't drop frames.

I have a 5400rpm HD on my laptop that captures fine.

It sounds like you have a setting wrong somewhere there.

I can capture 1080i into Avid on my laptop, Dual core 2.16 GHz 2 GB ram. But Avid only likes nVidia cards and is VERY picky about everything else, oh and I capture to a usb 2 hard drive, not the internal. The only problems I've found is when the audio overloads, the Avid stops capture, oh yes, and the perenial absence of 720 25p support aargh!

settings are exact same between my desktop and laptop for Edius.

laptop does have an ATI card in it, but my desktop is Nvidia...and neither work with Avid.

I have a 9700 ATI raedon, it's ok. I remember in a post something about 'disabling the firewire network', maybe it's conflicting.
