little wedding dilemma.

Hello fellow a1 readers,

I have a question concerning a wedding happening next month. Is there a way i can use my wireless mics. and my shotgun/camera mic simultaneously?

The reason is, i shot a wedding for a family friend here recently and switching the wireless mic off and going to camera mic always delayed me. I have to jump into the menu to be able to do any switch and by then the pastor had already started talking. This also lead to some silence momentarily.

I just don't want to miss anything while I attempt to switch mics, from wireless to camera mic.

plus i shoot alone.

thanks in advance.

Unfortunately, on the A1, you either have XLR input or internal mic on and the only way to switch that is through the menu.

The best way to address your problem is to mount a shotgun mic on the camera and connect it to one of the XLR jacks. You can then plug your wireless mic to the other XLR input. This way you will record a different source to each channel. You can mix them as you see fit in post. If you have more that one wireless mic you will need an external mixer.

Another alternative is to purchase an inexpensive mixer. Stores like Radio Shack or Fry's will typically have a sub $100 mini mixer that can handle XLR and 1/4 in or mini jack inputs. If you do a lot of shooting, having a portable mixer is very handy.

but can the mixer allow me to use a camera mic and a wireless mic simultaneously?

The shotgun idea is good but i am saving some $$$ for a litepanel, then later i will get a shotgun.

Well, in your question you asked about a wireless mic and a shotgun/camera mic. I was assuming an attached shotgun mic since the mic on the A1 isn't really a shot gun mic. If you're talking about the built in mic, then VideoBikerDude's suggestion would be the way to go.

The short answer is no. Its either the built in mic or the XLR inputs. Having the capability you want is the number one request to Canon by A1 users.

yeah, i guess i will have to anticipate when wireless mic needs to be switched to the cam mic. thanks to canon we don't a switch like the hvx. great work canon! :)

thanks for the replies.

I understand that my A1 will not allow use of of the BUILT IN mic and any external mics together.

I have a RODE Video Mic that is far superior to Canon's built-in Mic. It plugs into the mini mic jack. When this external mic is plugged in the built-in mic is automatically defeated which makes perfect sense. My question is this: If I use the RODE (mini jack) and also a lavalier mic in one of the XLR jacks, will I get audio from both sources?
