Litepanels Gemini 2×1 RGB-WW soft panel

Intriguing.

Newsshooter article states, "you can’t run it off a camera battery." Does that mean no power via V-mount or AB batteries? The photo shows it with a bulky, heavy, and expensive XLR power box on the floor, which is worrying.

However, this video below states it will have a double V-mount accessory (and thus I assume an AB one too).

Thats pretty nice...but I'd suspect that for an additional $1200 I'd rather have the name brand of Arri for rentals. But as an owner/op this looks to be a pretty good value. I like that the ballast is built in, since that's basically my biggest gripe with the skypanel and having to have a mess of cables attached.

What's the output? And why does no one quote the bloody power draw on LED fixtures anymore? It drives me barmy. There's three simple things I want to know with any light. Its TLCI at 3200k and 5600k, its power draw, and its beam angle. Those are three key facts that affect a light's usability for me.

The marketing fud gets to be a real pain in the arse sometimes.

I think that new ARRI panel quotes theirs at 1,500 watt.

The problem with ARRI is their price quote (~ $18,000-$22,000, I believe).

TLCI is apparently 98 with tungsten and 96 with daylight, very impressive, that's significantly better than the RGB Skypanels. Have to say I'm really liking the look of it so far. It's a better thought out design than the Skypanel and operation appears more intuitive.

I think these will do really well.

Adorama still has the promotion where they throw in a daylight astra with a gemini fixture purchase. Should have mine by the end of the week.

Worked with a Gaffer in Boston last week who’s a huge fan of the Gemini. Stated it was punchier, & produced better color than the S60-C. Also lighter.

Tried renting a pair in Chicago, & NYC, this week, but couldn’t get a Softbox, & SoftGrids, so passed this time around.

I hope you get one. I bought one through the Canadian reseller and told me I was out of luck. I bought it during black Friday

I gave the Gemini the once-over at the ASC presentation and was really impressed. I'd definitely like to put them into a lighting order once they become more common at rental houses. Really seems like they studied the Litepanel and improved on it in key areas.

Thoughts on the Gemini?

Hey Rob, I'll be bringing it along on it's first job tomorrow. But from playing around with it I was impressed.

It feels ten pounds lighter than a skypanel, so no worries with one person hoisting this up high on a stand. The output is not as punchy as a skypanel...but it's fairly close. Fun going through all of the gel emulations (though I didn't program any of the buttons yet). The fan seemed quiet, which was my biggest worry going into it. Build quality is nice, though much of it is plastic. I doubt it will be a problem for me, though perhaps wear and tear at a rental house won't be kind to it. I quite like that the knob on the yoke is only on one side, so no need to loosen two of them to tilt the light when on set. Frankly the biggest problem with the light is likely storing it. I have a soft case coming for it, there didn't seem to be any good hard case options at this point. I just ordered the blu tooth dongle, so will play around with controlling it via my phone later in the week.
